Back in the day we built a whole rep series out of the fact that Terrence Malick in The New World and Werner Herzog in Nosferatu used the prelude to Das Rheingold to very different effects and meanings.
What's your favorite use of pre-existing classical music in a movie not directed by Stanley Kubrick?
Mine is probably "Hall of the Mountain King" from Fritz Lang's M, the main melody of which is whistled by the killer.

I can remember my father watching the Mets on something like a 10 inch TV screen (not sure if was a color TV), in an apartment in the projects in the Bronx. The beer back then, Schaefer and Rheingold. Bob Murphy and Ralph Kiner (the Yankees had Rizzuto and White).
