More for their own emotional completion. That’s what makes it relatable and a “rooting interest”. As a writer you want to engineer, as best as possible, circumstances where the only thing protecting you as a viewer from the moral repugnancy is your own experience and values.

I'd compare them more to jellyfish - brainless, heartless and just existing to consume.

There's no, "Good Steward," for a Billion dollars of resources, other than the State, or an Org. charged with using it towards the general good. Goes back to that human nature thing partly, but also logistically one person can never allocate those resources well, not to mention the moral repugnancy

I know I got a blog post in my drive from 2016 about "Orc as a condition of being" which was prescient due to the relationship with the nature of Orc etymologically with Death/Death-spirits.
Thus the repugnancy is a persecution of man's fear of death applied to living/dying beings of similar form.
