Also without me sounding like a cop, let me be the latest person to say that I’m not a fan of the “ref you suck” chants at Audi. It takes away from what the players do on the field and I think the team actually doesn’t perform as well when the crowd is fixated on the decisions of the referee.

I think every club has at least one referee who they see as notorious, usually just on the basis of one match, not a series of games. Good performances are forgotten, bad ones (real or imagined) can stick in the mind permanently.

They feel the need to protect referees and shield them from accountability because it’s difficult to replace them, as the number of people wanting to be a referee keeps declining. Ok so do something to make it more attractive!

So full disclosure, I used to be a referee (over a decade ago and not in the UK) so I understand how a lot of these systemic issues came about and I kinda sympathise with the arguments that it is incredibly difficult to make changes without causing an exodus
