It’s not too late for a “what I read in 2024” recap. Why? Because I’m not ready to embrace all of what 2025 promises. I read 44 books all over the genre map, often alternating dark/heavy with light fluff. #read2024

This one left me cold. Enright’s ability to craft a sentence kept the pages turning, but the storyline was mostly underwhelming and slow. #read2024

"Really I'm trying to write about footy and my grandson and me. About boys at dusk. A little life-hymn. A poem.
A record of a season we are spending together before he turns into a man and I die."

Beautifully realised. #read2024

Another fine book from Wood. Set in the confines of a convent in regional NSW. A quiet and introspective exploration of grief, religiosity, and forgiveness. In latter sections, I could see why Wood was being compared to Strout. #read2024

Hexwood, by Diana Wynne Jones.
Ann sees strange strangers keep arriving at Hexwood and goes to find out what’s happening, only to keep finding herself in a wood that isn’t there helping a wizard and a robot raise a mysterious boy. Or maybe not. It’s weird.

A burglary, the suicide of a dear friend, and a pandemic. The grief is palpable but the writing also sharply funny. A good dose of the book publishing industry too. #read2024

Review of #ProphetSong by Paul Lynch.

A slim book designed to be read in one sitting, the story alternates between Nabila as a six-year-old in her Palestinian village and in her eighties in Sydney. What lingered with me most is the enduring weight of dispossession and hurt. #read2024

A collective memoir with more than 50 voices layered upon each other to give a rich portrait of the charismatic and complex Aboriginal leader Tracker Tilmouth. A remarkable and epic achievement by Wright. My quibble is the book is too long, and yet I wouldn’t change it. #read2024

Small, spare, and spectacular. Isolated by the Melbourne lockdown and by the grief of a terrible tragedy, the arrival of a pet bunny brings hope. A late runner for my favourite fiction of 2024. #read2024

It’s a truly excellent book.

This book has inspired me to sharpen my writing. To make it clear and lively. Tredennick has produced a rare thing — a writer’s manual with soul. A Goodreads reviewer aptly described it as “A writing book for people who love reading.” #read2024

A raunchy, rollicking read as well as an intelligent look at art, relationships, and what it is “to love your family but to want to grow into something different.” And so quintessentially Australian. I couldn’t do anything until I had finished it. Loved it. #read2024

Eliza Vanda’s Button Box, by Emily Rodda.

Mysterious Eliza Vanda comes to stay in the holiday cottages Milly’s father owns, and Milly helps her with her peculiar brand of “mending”.

Charming and soft and all wrapped up neatly, just as you’d expect from Emily Rodda.

A searing critique of the most breathtakingly callous and venal government actions. Morton exposes how those in power viewed society’s most vulnerable not as people to be supported but as resources to be exploited. Devastating. #read2024
