Weekly CTU Trial Update! 📢

Huge milestones this week:
@easyas-trial.bsky.social welcomed its 1,000th UK participant and completed an SIV with Erasmus MC, Netherlands!

Momentum continues for @coloprevent.bsky.social with a new Resveratrol trial randomisation. Onwards! 📈

In my experience, this is generally only a significant problem when there's a lot of what we used to call "points of contact" involving randomisation.
If it's the kind of play where a GM is asking for skill checks every 20 seconds then you're going to get bogged down in card logistics.

aleatory.
A term used to describe art where there is a chance element in it, where a degree of randomisation is brought in. There is no need to wait for the artist to do this: simply take any painting or book, cut it into small pieces, and even the most mundane art can become vibrant and new.

It’s just drawing the line 3 times with offsets & a bit of randomisation, then varying line width based on speed

I understand Mendelian randomisation as a form of instrumental variables.

And like all instrumental variables, it's black magic and not to be trusted.

Yeah, more examples and better randomisation would have been more satisfying (and probably more useful, tbh)

So in a way seeing trains in operation feels like observing one large mechanism/contraption (like a mechanical cuckoo clock or astrological one) with some level of predictability, marvelling at complexity and automation of it's parts, while it still has enough randomisation to keep it fresh.

Congratulations to PI Graeme Ambler & the Research Delivery Team at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for randomising the 2️⃣nd participant in November!🎇🎇 Cambridge have been open for 1️⃣6️⃣ months & with 2️⃣8️⃣ participants have an above average monthly randomisation rate of 1️⃣.7️⃣5️⃣ per month!

Last I went they gave you an hour free. Turning on non-persistent MAC randomisation meant you could get another free hour by disconnecting and reconnecting. And I swear the walls are a cage to prevent you using your own data...

“Intercurrent events” are post-randomisation events (eg discontinuation of treatment or treatment switching) and the estimand describes precisely how these events will be handled in the analysis. 3/8

#BabyPferd couldn't decide which game to play, so I modified a simple randomisation code to decide for us. It chose "Tricky Wave", which made her realise she'd like to play Snap. Which basically made me feeling exactly how a field partner deciding they won't randomise my study, after all, does.

New Mendelian randomisation study finds no strong evidence that higher genetically predicted adiposity increases head & neck cancer risk. This suggests obesity itself may not be a major causal driver, after accounting for smoking.

No evidence of a causal relationship between negative emotions and glaucoma: evidence triangulation from genetic correlation, Mendelian randomisation and colocalisation
Purpose Observational studies suggest that anxiety and depression disorders have significant correlation, but these results may have been influenced by confounding factors, and negative emotions that do not meet the criteria for clinical mental disease diagnosis are more common, the evidence for this association is unclear. This study employed whole-genome linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC), Mendelian randomisation (MR), Bayesian colocalisation (colocalisation) to explore association between common negative emotions and glaucoma. Design Bidirectional genetic associations between negative emotion and glaucoma. Participants Data from UK Biobank and FinnGen R10. Methods MR, whole-genome LDSC, Bayesian colocalisation. Main outcome measures Genetic causal associations between negative emotion and glaucoma. Result At Bonferroni-corrected levels of significance, there was no genetic correlation, causal association or shared genetic mechanism between any negative emotions and glaucoma, except for depression, which showed a genetic link but no causal evidence. Conclusions Depression, anxiety and eight other common negative emotions may not be causally associated with glaucoma and there may be no genetic correlation between them.

I love @kholbatar.bsky.social art, so wanted to continue the flow of reposting, even though what I create is... I'll say "unskilled" in comparison 😂

I have my moments.

Please follow me there for more Lockwoods, as I work to transition from the Sims 4 to an entirely new world. As I said before I am going to continue the main arc here, as Sims Lit, but I will step away from the game entirely. What I need to do is plan out some randomisation.

A key reason for extending the 3 year BA partial randomisation pilot for small grants for a further 3 years is to generate more evidence re any impact of partial randomisation on outputs (and thus to get at your more/less 'effective' point). A RCT would be a fine thing, but tricky to orchestrate.

We’ve been using partial randomisation for over 3 years for our small research grants and it’s reduced bureaucracy, improved diversity (including institutionally) and those who fail the lottery can still tell promotion cttes if they hit our quality bar

Grants awarded by lottery popular with minority, junior scholars
Unexpected upsides of ‘randomised’ funding include greater acceptance among rejected applicants, says British Academy head
