It started when I interviewed 20 Ruby startup founders last year. Gave a keynote (!) at RailsConf. Launched SF Ruby meetup. Now it's coming together: the missing open source (AI, frontend), Ruby startups, Ruby devs. Learning from each other. Building the future. Together. In Ruby. At @sfruby.com

Only because there’s no more Railsconf. Also now you have to come to Haggis Ruby.

Nice. Back in 2013, we took a bunch of Rails developers up there during RailsConf. www.flickr.com/photos/plane...

A surprise appearance by @marcoroth.dev live from Switzerland at XO Ruby Austin.

We got a sneak peek at Herb v0.8.0.

Thanks, Marco!

So, as a Multi-Award-Winning Senior Ruby/Rails Software Engineer and a RubyConf/RailsConf speaker, I discredit Martin Giannakopoulos completely and advise against hiring him.

A lot of that angst was with Rails in particular, and the horrible schism related to DHH's politics reaching a tipping point this year with the lack of Ruby Central to enforce their own Code of Conduct for RailsConf this year. DHH's replatforming was a disaster.

And then the takeover happened…
October 20, 2025 at 1:02 AM
That's not true. In fact, RailsConf this year got far more sponsors than RC. There were 3 x $50k, 1 x $35k, 2 x $25k sponsors. railsconf.org/sponsors/

@TheEvilSkeleton @frameworkcomputer i think its worth mentioning that this list of sponsors also includes a DHH run conferences "Rails world" which as created by him directly in response to being banned from RailsConf. so he could still shill omarchy and shit there
October 17, 2025 at 2:37 AM
Where did I say it was DHH's fault? I said simple cause and effect.

DHH was platformed at RailsConf 2025.
Mike pulled funding.
October 10, 2025 at 9:18 PM
Yes. Hang on I'll get you the link. Mike Perham did agree he pulled the $250,000/year of funding via Sidekiq due to the platforming of DHH at RailsConf 2025.
October 10, 2025 at 8:04 PM
I can also directly confirm that DHH weaponized his apperance at RailsConf (before his appearance, this was on social media a mere 2 days after the initial announcement) to attack perceived enemies, RC *knew* this (because I supplied the evidence!), and they took no action to enforce their CoC.
October 9, 2025 at 1:38 AM
I can directly confirm that DHH's surprise apperance at RailsConf 2025 caused a funding catastrophe for Ruby Central which then led to the board deciding on the recent course of events *because the only big remaining sponsor was Shopify* and if they ran off, RC as a viable org was completely toast.

Matt Mullenweg summarizes recent controversy in the Ruby community involving company influence over Bundler and RubyGems, and notes that Automattic’s attempt to sponsor RailsConf for its open web apps was denied

> Immediately after DHH's RailsConf 2025 keynote was announced, Ruby Central announced and then conducted a listening session, with the promise that a recording would be released afterwards.

There was no DHH keynote at RailsConf 2025. It was a fireside chat.
October 3, 2025 at 7:25 PM
Also this all started because when DHH was asked to share the keynote stage at RailsConf he threw a fit and started a competing org and conference. As I see it DHH killed RailsConf then was invited back to dance on its grave.

You did the right thing here, much respect.

…and a “full circle” moment as it was the last RailsConf ever. There was no discussion that I heard about inviting him to future RubyConfs or platforming him in any other ways.

We also had 3 different executive directors within the span of time that the decision was brought up and finalized.
October 2, 2025 at 6:39 PM
That tracks for RCs inability to communicate 😂

That aside, I also had this thought & generalized it as “event politics”. I think it could help if they got out of events since there’s tons of them now.

I remember being pissed web3 & dhh was cut from RailsConf on the grounds of neutrality.

Oh wow, I missed this post by Matz he made back on September 26 outright denying what had been reported by Japanese outlet Gigazine regarding the RailsConf backlash due to DHH's racism.

Matz carrying DHH's water is such a bad look for #ruby. He's also been […]

paul graham invited me to apply late to yc in 2006 but that’s not my pg story

my pg story is seeing him speak @ an early railsconf. truly the worst public speaker i've ever seen. which, whatever

but then he later published an essay that said “if you are a good public speaker you are a bad thinker”
October 1, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Well the numbers for this year’s RailsConf aren’t publicly available yet but I will say I think things are turning around… And I would bet Rails World at the very least breaks even (altho idk…) And in Japan there’s just an INCREDIBLE number of sponsors — something like ~50 companies sponsored Kaigi!
October 1, 2025 at 1:07 PM
I think the funding through individual developer did exist to some extent via the benefits made on RubyConf and RailsConf.

But I suspect that revenue is no longer what it once was prior to the pandemic. Few companies still have a paid conference perk now.

I meant at RailsConf, but there’s no edit button.
