DNS:
1. Technitium as an in-home recursive DNS resolver. If you can install Linux, you can manage the tiny extra step to do this!
2. Adguard Home as an in-home filtering DNS forwarder. A hair easier than the above.
3. Just set Quad9 as your DNS resolver wherever possible: quad9.net

Quad9 offers privacy, security, and a free global DNS service - three things that don’t usually coexist. In this interview, we dig into how they pull it off, what drives their mission, and the real-world challenges behind keeping a service like this online.

🛡️ CSC is strengthening cybersecurity across Finland's research and education sector in collaboration with Swiss-based Quad9. By hosting Quad9’s infrastructure in FI, DNS queries originating in Finland are resolved locally, adding resilience and privacy to the service.

Yup that is why i use Quad9 because Switzerland at least for now has very tough user data privacy laws that are better than almost all other countries. Then i use a vpn to encrypt the endpoint destination so the vpn provider only knows tge site i actually visited because my queries are encrypted.

I’ve done a bit of checking. Things are fine for me on IPv6 and IPv4
The issue does seem to be DNS. Specifically Google DNS is returning SERVFAIL.
Others including Cloudflare and Quad9 are returning both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses

I don't trust Cloudflare not to sell me out.
I do trust Quad9.
I trust Cisco to be uninterested in my stuff :-)
But all of them are going to block the worst stuff out there, including a lot of malware that uses DNS to phone home, so it's valuable.

Congratulations to Quad9! It is unfair and repugnant to require public interest entities like Quad9, who work for FREE to help people use the Internet safely, to be involuntary police for commercial interests.

Boas, mas não tão boas quanto o Quad9. Ligeiramente melhor que o Cloudflare.
Mas tendo em conta que é europeu, pergunto como será de bloqueio de sites....

You may be getting blocked because some vpns don’t encrypt their dns or use public dns servers. I used to get blocked by BBC Iplayer until i changed my dns to use Quad9…no more blocks.

I would use Quad9 for DNS and Proton VPN. Both based in Switzerland which has wildly tight user data privacy laws those companies must adhere to. Additionally neither company logs so they don’t know what you are doing online.

Still where are the lawsuits? That would still be false advertising regardless. Quad9 misleading too?

Okay huh, it resolves via Level3 (4.2.2.1) but not Google DNS (8.8.8.8), Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). Looks like it's working via Quad9 (9.9.9.9) intermittently.
