Better Together 2025: 29/10 update As a planned speaker at Better Together 2025, I recently advised that I would be withdrawing from the conference unless The Equality Project reversed their decision to platform Matt Beard’s hateful and misinformed anti-trans views. As of today (29 October), the podcast has been pulled down and Jason from TEP has posted a personal apology, recognising that the episode in question was hurtful, harmful and misinformed, and that trans and gender diverse people are a vital, non-negotiable part of the queer community. Prior to the apology, several organisations, including Queerspace and Transgender Victoria, had expressed their concerns and withdrawn their support for the event, but had not called for a general boycott – instead stating that individuals would make their own call on the matter. As above, my initial call was to withdraw. This decision was not made lightly: a-specs have so few chances to be heard as is. But I’m proud that I was able to raise my voice in this matter, and proud that my fellow aces and aros felt similarly. We know full well that transphobia goes hand-in-hand with aphobia. An apology like this does not resolve the issue, but it’s an important first step. It gives me hope that we will see further change. Following the latest apology, I asked if it was possible for my session to be added back into the program. Thankfully, this has now occurred, albeit with a change in time. I will now be speaking at 11:30am on Friday, in the Orange Room. My session is titled, “A-Spec History in a Physical Space: The Making of Nonlimerent // Monosexual”. I recognise that some will still choose not to attend. I respect that decision. As stated above, I am not aware of an organised boycott, thus I’ve made a personal decision based on my own morals and my own read of the situation. For those who do attend: I hope to see you there!

Following the recent statement by Queerspace, I have advised the organising team that I will not participate unless they reverse their decision to platform Matt Beard's hateful and misinformed views on transgender women and young people, as per episode 4 of the so-called "Brave Conversations" series. The episode featured two cisgender men discussing whether transgender women should be allowed access to female bathrooms or to participate in women's sports. The lack of self-awareness was astounding. The episode also repeated common anti-trans conspiracy theories and "evidence" from the discredited Cass Report. These claims are hurtful, false and linked to growing global intolerance, authoritarianism and declining access to gender-affirming care, including in Australia. There was nothing brave about this conversation. It was hateful, false and punched downwards. I remain hopeful that the Equality Project will change their stance. If not, I will unfortunately have to cancel my presentation. I'm very sad to have to make this call. I was planning to talk about my recent exhibition, Nonlimerent // Monosexual: An Aromantic and Asexual History. A-spec people are still a very small minority at events like these, and we fight extra hard for every extra seat at the table. But if history has taught us anything, it's that there is no queer justice without trans justice. I hope to see you all at a more inclusive event sometime soon.

You know I love a queer bookshop and this Glaswegian dream of a queer space is absolutely delightful. Bug and Fin started Category is Books in 2018 to create the kind of space they were craving in their own neighbourhood. As the name promises, Category is Books has some exquisite shelving categories: from ‘Dyke Aching’ to ‘Trans Lit’ to the extensive poetry and theory sections, Bug and Fin show off their excellent taste on their shelves. WHAT CAN IT MEAN TO SHOW UP AND GET INVOLVED? (SPRING 2025) This handout shares just a few examples of groups doing work in our Twin Cities community. No organization is perfect, and no list of local groups will be 100% complete. But when we're trying to figure out how to show up, it can help to have a snapshot of the work being done. For some people, these groups might be potential starting points; for others, maybe just groups or projects to have "on your radar" (following on social media, subscribing to email lists, etc) so you can respond to calls-to-action as they are made. There's also incredible work being done that isn't under the banner of any one specific organization or initiative. A little bit of research should turn up even more. With some groups, you can join or volunteer right away. With others, it may be about finding more creative ways to support their work: organizing fundraisers, signal-boosting their projects, attending a training, etc. We don't all have to always be involved with everything. We can find a lane, or even just a first step into a lane, and keep going from there! Interested in local politics? Door-knocking, phone-banking, democracy-related stuff?
