#Psychidae
Pre-print and weird repro thread time!

I've posted here about scale insects a lot, but ~half of my research is on Lepidoptera. My lab is developing bagworm moths (Psychidae) as models for comparative genomics.

You probably know them like you see in the pics below: caterpillars that make cases.

The parasitised Luffia lapidella larva hasn’t moved for three days and has fixed itself to the side of the Perspex container.
It will be interesting to see what emerges!

The parasitised Luffia lapidella larva, which should have metamorphosed in the summer has made it to Halloween.🎃
It stopped feeding last week and wandered away from the lichen substrate provided for it.
🧙
This Larva Aeterna seems to be the last of the Baildon Luffia colony 😕

Down but not out! The parasitised Luffia lapidella larva is not dead after all. After five days of inactivity it has “done a Lazarus” and resumed feeding on lichen.
This is a great example of a larva aeterna and it might be some time before the culprit reveals itself.

The parasitised Luffia lapidella larva hasn’t moved since Friday 10th October.
Presumably the moth caterpillar has now been killed by the parasitoid larva and we now have to wait until the culprit emerges as an adult wasp.

Havies vist mai AIXÒ? 👀

Us presento a Amicta quadrangularis, una arna de la família Psychidae 🦋.

I on està l'arna?

The presumably parasitised Luffia lapidella larva (collected from a Baildon sycamore trunk) is still feeding on the Lecanora lichen. It is now well into its second Autumn.
Hopefully an interesting parasitoid wasp will emerge from this larva aeterna in a few weeks.

Can you help us ID this species of #insect? It was filmed at TLC's The Big Punchbowl Reserve, crawling along in casuarina debris. Tip: we think it might be a #moth in the family #Psychidae.

The Psychidae (bagworm moths, also simply bagworms or bagmoths) are a family of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths).

The bagworm family is fairly small, with about 1,350 species described. Bagworm species are found globally.

Over the last few years the amount of light-green lichen on the Baildon Luffia’s sycamore has decreased dramatically. This seems to be the last remaining larva but hopefully there may be others higher up the tree and therefore out of sight.

Despite torrential rain all day Saturday, we risked putting out the moth motel last night. Very few moth visitors (just 6/6) but this beauty was among them.
