I have to zoom out my second screen to 33% in portrait mode so that I can screenshot all the pro-housing bills Gavin Newsom signed today on one image. This is absurd (laudatory)

I dive into a possible deeper reason why all these yes votes overlap, and why the rest of the city is a sea of no's, in my latest blog post. It all could point to a future way forward for the prohousing movement in LA.
Oops! City Council helped pass SB 79
...and in the process showed both our ugly segregationist past and our promising prohousing future.

I wrote about Nithya Raman's evolution on housing from cautious DSA lefty to full-throated prohousing leader. She's gone on a Buffy Wicks-like policy tear in 2025, tackling everything from single stair to permitting reform. Zoning is likely next.

Could housing politics in LA be getting better?
Nithya Raman's YIMBY moment
Finally, an LA politician is taking our housing crisis seriously.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development is considering whether to designate the City of Fresno as a Pro-housing City. A “Prohousing City” reduces barriers to housing, and can earn the designation plus receive priority access to grants for affordable housing.

BC’s NDP government has led the most ambitious prohousing strategy of any state/province in US/Canada. It has:
—Funded large increase in affordable housing
—Developed a revolving loan fund for middle cost housing
—Rezoned to allow very large developments near transit

B.C. NDP favoured, but Conservatives could pull off upset
NDP ends campaign with a narrow lead in most polls and the regional and demographic breaks it needs to win.

Curious about federal tax & housing policy? Check out my new paper w/ aarmlovi.bsky.social and Sam Jacobson.

We argue that Congress should make housing projects in big, expensive cities ineligible for affordable-housing tax credits unless the city opts into federal prohousing rules.

i’ve been a prohousing / urbanist gadfly in Berkeley for 15 years, trust me I agree in principle.

but that doesn’t get many 80 year olds out of cars in Berkeley in the near future.

Berkeley NIMBYs love hissing prohousing residents. @ericpanzer.bsky.social memorably responded with “the applause of snakes”.

Housing affordability needs bold moves—like embracing single-stair buildings. They've proven safe globally, slash costs, and help cities build smarter. Let's reform outdated codes. #ProHousing #SingleStair

The City of Fresno is hosting a Prohousing & Housing Element Workshop to share updates on its current prohousing application and the housing element programs it’s implemented so far. But this process isn’t complete without community voices!

My city is getting docked points on its Prohousing application for not having a draconian enough inclusionary policy. (Needs to have a Very Low Income requirement, rather than a menu of options.) Deeply unserious state.

Not really. Plenty of prohousing folks in the 350 crowd. You should probably get to know all the factions first

Previous proposals for conditioning federal housing assistance on land-use reforms have targeted the suburbs -- and gone nowhere.

We argue that Congress should focus on big, expensive cities instead, b/c in these cities the opposition to prohousing policies is driven...

I was with my local buddy, Raul, in the plaza Univeristad Starbucks when we saw this demonstration going on. He told me it was stahed by some kind of self-proclamed prohousing unions (?). By my face you can guess the smell 🤢 What do they expect, a free house? 😂 Grow up!

Like Yonas, and many others, we want the City of Fresno to gain their prohousing status back, only if real reform is made possible.

I watched adam conover's interview with them an in it klein says "California has passed dozens of prohousing bills and it hasn't had an impact..."

And i would really like him to explore that thought but they moved on.
