but the opam repo isn't just a database - it's a comprehensive CI system testing packages across 5+ OS platforms and multiple architectures (even RISC-V and PowerPC!). it ensures quality through both automation and human review 🔥

A tease of something amazingly exciting... Mac OS 8 for CHRP PowerPC systems! 😳
I'm working to get this CD archived properly... (along with it's friends) 💿
Super thankful to the amazing people who helped make this happen. ❤️

something i would like everyone to think about is the fact that Costco (and other retailers - Costco is not alone) runs a big chunk of their business operations on AS400/IBM i which is an OS developed in the 80s, and still primarily runs on PowerPC-based hardware.

Hot retrocomputing take: Classic 68k-based Macs fucking suck and are annoying and you shouldn't collect one. You're better served with an Apple II, IIGS or a slightly later PowerPC Mac.

I started using a Linux-based OS in 1996. I've installed Slackware from floppies. I was VP of my LUG in college. I compiled my own kernel for years. I've run Linux on Sparc, x86, amd64, PowerPC, and multiple flavors of ARM.
Telling me to "Run Linux" solves zero of my computing problems. Thanks.

Newer POWER CPUs have a proper hypervisor mode, just like newer ARM CPUs, but on Linux/PowerPC, there's a KVM-PS module ("Problem State" being IBMese for user mode) that runs a QEMU guest OS in user mode, and all memory management and privileged instructions get trapped and emulated by the module.

I managed to pick up one of the most striking Apple computers ever made.
This iMac G4 was available locally for a great price and has a 1 GHz PowerPC CPU, a maximum configuration of 2GB of RAM, and a 15" flat panel active display.
It's in excellent condition and has everything with it. Beautiful!

I’ve always thought it was very interesting that they chose to change that in the early 2000s so that the logo was right-way-up when open, which coincided with the move away from PowerPC architecture and to Intel’s x86 architecture.

That's the CPU, the PowerPC 603. Those pins definitely should not be bridged like that.

@sukahiroaki.bsky.social erwähnt in einem Nebensatz die mögliche Existenz eines komplett neuen Gerätedesigns. Das finde ich großartig pointiert. Es ist typisch für Apple, riesige Schwenks subtil anzugehen. (PowerPC->Intel->Apple Silicon) Strategisch eigene Produktkategorien kannibalisieren. (iPods)

The BeBox has two PowerPC 603 CPUs running at 66MHz, TONS of input/output options, and the iconic “Blinkenlights” - twin columns of LED’s which rise and fall in sync with the ‘load’ being carried by each of the CPUs inside.

I was thinking more of apps from the Apple/Intel era, and that’s for PowerPC, but yeah, it’s the same idea. As far as I know, there’s no version of that for the Snow Leopard to Mojave era of 32-bit app support.
