Rob Greene • 6h A few thoughts I sent to Jeanne Shaheen: Dear Senator Shaheen, I wrote to you in September urging you to use the government shutdown as leverage against President Trump. Specifically, to protect the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits that help more than 20 million Americans afford health insurance. You and Senator Hassan did exactly that. You held the line through 40 days and nights. Then you folded. I guess I'm not surprised. In June 1999, the New Hampshire Business Review wrote about your best trick. The headline: "Governor Shaheen has mastered the art of ‘triangulation.'" Here's what they said: "With promises expressed in generalities, she makes one segment of the electorate happy, but then her actions seem to shortchange her most ardent supporters while accommodating her opposition -- and in the process she builds up a huge following in the middle, leaving both fringes apoplectic." "Appealing to your liberal support with promises, but delivering to the conservatives, and taking the conservatives' issues away from them in the process." That was 26 years ago. Political observers spotted the pattern in your first term as the "education governor". When the state Supreme Court ruled that funding schools through local property taxes was unconstitutional, the Democratic N.H. House nassed an income tax bill with bipartisan support. Sixty Republicans voted for it. You killed it. Behind the scenes. Mary McGrory of the Charleston Gazette reported that "[your] agents begged Democrats 'not to embarrass the governor' by forcing her to veto [the income-tax bill]." Twenty Democrats you pressured defected. The income tax died. Meanwhile, pink slips went out to New Hampshire teachers and you suggested we fund schools by playing the horses. McGrory wrote: "If anyone could lead the state...it's Jeanne Shaheen. But she will not do it." True in 1999. True in 2025. Now we have the third data point. You held the line for 40 days. Long enough to convince me that maybe this time was different. Federal workers went without paychecks. SNAP benefits were disrupted. Air traffic was reduced. The suffering was real. It was supposed to be the leverage. Then you voted to end the shutdown without securing the ACA subsidies. You got what House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called "a promise, a wing and a prayer, from folks who have been devastating the health care of the American people for years." Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said you "abandoned the party's negotiating position" and “surrendered critical leverage." They're right. You got a handshake promise... They're right. You got a handshake promise of a future vote from the same Republicans who spent 40 days refusing to negotiate. House Speaker Mike Johnson has already refused to commit to that vote. The consequences: More than 20 million Americans will lose enhanced ACA premium tax credits in weeks. Families will face premium increases of hundreds of dollars per month. Some will drop coverage entirely. Federal workers will face this again on January 30, 2026, when the continuing resolution expires. You put them through 40 days of hell for nothing. They'll remember. You didn't oppose President Trump's efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. You enabled them. You had leverage. You surrendered it. In your response, you wrote: "Please continue to engage your local, state and federal officials on issues that are important to you - your efforts and advocacy are the only way we as Granite Staters and as Americans continue to move forward." I'm engaged. This was a catastrophic betrayal. Not just of your party's position, but of millions of vulnerable Americans who needed you to hold the line. You're retiring. You could have ended your career standing firm on principle when it mattered most. Instead, you're ending it the way you began it: promising progressives, delivering to conservatives, leaving vulnerable people to suffer while you escape the fallout.

Today the 3rd Circuit Court ordered the @post-gazette.com to restore our contract it illegally tore up 5 years ago. That’s our health care, PTO, right to a 40-hr. work week, short-term disability and so much more we’ve struck for 3+ years.

PRESS RELEASE AFL-CIO Celebrates Pittsburgh Post- Gazette Workers Winning Their Strike November 10, 2025 AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued the following statement today celebrating the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette workers' victory after a 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling upheld their demands for the newspaper to repeal more than five years of workers' rights violations and to compensate those who were impacted: Working people don't back down from a fight, no matter how long it takes or how tough it gets. The members of the Pittsburgh News Guild-CWA have proven that time and again for the past three years. I am thrilled to congratulate them on their resounding victory. The staff of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stood on the picket line throughout the longest ongoing strike in the United States, fighting against the Post-Gazette's union-busting efforts as it consistently tried to deny workers their health care and break the terms of their contract. Since filing unfair labor practice charges in 2020 and going out on strike in October 2022, they have continued to serve their community with a strike newspaper, the Pittsburgh Union Progress. Today, a federal court ruled that the Post-Gazette must meet its obligations under the workers' collective bargaining agreement, including providing health care coverage, a short-term disability plan, a 40-hour workweek and workers' right to appeal discipline. The Post-Gazette workers' heroic persistence exemplifies the power of what we can achieve when we come together in a union. For three years, they have bravely stood up for their own rights and have thereby held the line for everyone who works for a living. Their struggle has shown us all that when we fight, we win.
