A few more close zooms into my reconstruction of the "sea-rex," a Jurassic pliosaur. Here we see the smaller sea-rex and some Thrissops fish. This piece was commissioned by The Etches Collection.

If they reproduced the same style like later polycotylids, the newborn ones were just huge. Pliosaurus could reach a total lenght of about 12 m. So our 3 m model is a very young juvenile. Never fell into the prey class of a number of fishes!

Paleo Fact!

Pliosaurus (More Lizard) is a pliosaurid from Late Jurassic Europe and South America! Its name refers to how it was once thought to be closer to the Sauria group of reptiles than Plesiosaurus was! But contrary to that idea, Pliosaurus and - (1/2)

The specimen has initially named Peloneustes irgisensis and then became a new genus, Strongylokrotaphus. It has later been referred to Pliosaurus and is currently considered to be an indeterminate thalassophonean. The fossils are now at the Palaeontological Institute (PIN) in Moscow. 3/4

I'm still keen on visiting the Lyme Regis museum and maybe the Etches collection, probably this time next year?
I want to see that giant pliosaur skull; funny to think that one of that size could probably tuck into a Liopleurodon for lunch

‪Palaeoart enthusiasts will know about Alice B. Woodward, but you hear much less about her sister Gertrude (1854–1939), a prolific illustrator of scientific papers on subjects like the Terra Nova Expedition and Piltdown Man. Lots of letters and originals are held by @nhmlibraryarchives.bsky.social

We awarded two Richard Owen Research Grants this year, to @christinesd.bsky.social (left) for the project, 'Investigating mycorrhizas in the Rhynie chert plants', and to Edward Bartlett (right), for 'Description of the osteology and taphonomy of Pliosaurus'. Looking forward to seeing the results!
