This Wednesday @bgraedel.bsky.social defended his PhD — crowning an extraordinary scientific journey.
He showed how live-cell imaging and computational modeling can reveal and perturb cytoskeletal dynamics at micrometer and second-level scales.
Thanks Benjamin — a wild, inspiring ride! 🚀

Democracy is not guaranteed by the number of people who get a PhD (congrats by the way) but by the level of basic education given to everyone.

In a democracy everyone (as many as possible) needs to be able to participate.

Three different senses of the word "derivative" in one answer, the first underlining his apparent belief that a derivative, mathematically, is somehow a "deeper" or more meaningful understanding of something (it's just an equation for the slope of a different equation at any point on a graph).

You could be right. He might not be very smart at all. But his PhD and MBA indicate an advanced level of academic excellence and achievement that I would hope would correspond to a higher than average level of intelligence. That said, I could be wrong. He does not look smart being in that room.

Wow -- look at OpenAI trying to shift responsibility to the users:

Absolutely dreadful news and a shocking indictment of UoN.

Speaking as a science PhD with decades of research experience, the current UK attitude to wider education, of which the Arts are an essential part, Is appalling.

The narrowness of the English A Level system doesn't help masters

Would it have deterred me? No, I really wanted a PhD and that level of study. But with everything I know now, I probably would have blown off the academic job market entirely.

I have always wondered if there is a best method/software to process T1w image (at a vertex/voxel wise level). Elise Delzant has some answers in her first published paper from her PhD. She compared FreeSurfer, CAT12 and FSL across several traits and analyses (association, prediction).

You and @tcrg2012.bsky.social both are incredible! Women in STEM fields is something I’m so passionate about but to get a PhD in the field, next level!!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

Why Is CR's Level of Concern for Lead So Low?

simply put: there is no safe level of lead exposure. (the FDA & WHO agree!) we base our level on CA's Prop 65 MADL for lead bc it's the most protective standard available. some people dunk on it for this very reason, but again: no safe level of exposure

I can only assume that the reason for the deluge of AI written papers submitted to journals is because of tech companies desperate to get an AI written article through peer review so they can claim “PhD level of intelligence” for their bot.
arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review.

This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month.

Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.

Daniel Biss, Mayor of Evanston (just north of Chicago), is a Harvard Grad, has an MA & PHD from MIT in algebraic topology and is standing up to the "Tonto" Drumpf Regime ICE Brigade! Oh, he has at least 5 level lines on his forehead!

And so it begins…
The implosion of the US begins.
PM Carney’s patience in the trade war could be related as a PhD level economist likely could see trouble coming for Trump’s administration on interest rates.

Gelechioidea, that superdiverse superfamily of Lepidoptera that has been a super mess taxonomically, finally gets some structure at the family level with phylogenomics! Read all about it in our article led by PhD student @etkayapar.bsky.social !

Integrating Sanger and next‐generation sequencing data sheds light on phylogenetic relationships among gelechioid moths (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea)
The maximum-likelihood analysis of a phylogenomic dataset of 1767 protein-coding genes from 57 ingroup taxa yields a robust family-level topology for Gelechioidea, revealing novel among-family relat...

My son is a post doc at Oxford and the level of funding is far beyond what Canada offers. Same for his PhD in 🇺🇸

The problem is attracting our talent back home with such paltry funding after they’re done their training.

They also have an immigration policy that directly works against the skills shortages in construction. Tradespeople don’t need A-Level standard English or a phd. We need a grown up position on the realities of skills shortages, ballooning pension costs and the positive impact of immigration on this
