Pentangle during their peak years were simply untouchable. The loss of Matthew Corbett to Sooty syndrome in 1976 was a tragedy.

Remembering folk musician & co-founder of Pentangle, singer-songwriter Bert Jansch, born Herbert Jansch on November 3, 1943, in Glasgow, Scotland. He died October 5, 2011, 5 years after I saw him @ Arthur Nights at the Palace Theatre in downtown L.A.

“At one point, I was absolutely obsessed with Bert Jansch. When I first heard that LP [1965], I couldn’t believe it. It was so far ahead of what everyone else was doing.” ~ Jimmy Page (who recorded Jansch’s ‘Blackwaterside’ as ‘Black Mountain Side’ with Led Zeppelin after hearing it on Jansch's third album, 'Jack Orion'). One of my favorites is 'L.A. Turnaround,' his ninth album, released in 1974. After the demise of Pentangle, Jansch recorded the album in Tony Stratton Smith's home in Crowborough, Sussex and in a studio in California. It was produced by Michael Nesmith with the exception of two of the tracks ("Chambertin" and former bandmate John Renbourn’s "Lady Nothing") which were recorded in Paris a year earlier. A short film was produced during the sessions in Sussex. In his review for Allmusic, critic Thom Jurek wrote of the album, "The album was hailed at the time as an exemplary work, and its reputation certainly holds in the 21st century... the set walks through a lush garden that stands between the traditional English folk that Jansch had mastered and a sort of easy-breathing country-rock. Simply put, this is one of Jansch’s masterpieces, and a singular type of album in his long and storied career." Bert Jansch was born in Glasgow and came to prominence in London in the 1960s, as an acoustic guitarist, as well as a singer-songwriter. He recorded at least 25 albums and toured extensively from the 1960s to the 21st century. Jansch was a leading figure in the British folk music revival of the 1960s, touring folk clubs and recording several solo albums, as well as collaborating with other musicians such as John Renbourn and Anne Briggs. In 1968, he co-founded the band Pentangle, touring and recording with them until their break-up in 1972. He then took a few years' break from music, returning in the late 1970s to work on a series of projects with other musicians. He joined a reformed Pentangle in the early 1980s and remained with them as they evolved through various changes of personnel until 1995. Until his death, Jansch continued to work as a solo artist. Jansch's work influenced such artists as Al Stewart, Paul Simon, Johnny Marr, Elton John, Ian Anderson, Bernie Taupin, Bernard Butler, Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Graham Coxon, Donovan, Neil Young, Fleet Foxes, Devendra Banhart, Neil Halstead, and Roy Harper. Jansch received two Lifetime Achievement Awards at the BBC Folk Awards: one, in 2001, for his solo achievements and the other, in 2007, as a member of Pentangle. One of my favorite tunes of his is "Needle of Death." In a 1992 interview for the French "Guitare & Claviers" magazine, Neil Young discussed Jansch' influence: "As for acoustic guitar, Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi (Hendrix). That first record of his is epic. It came from England, and I was especially taken by "Needle of Death," such a beautiful and angry song. That guy was so good. And years later, on 'On the Beach,' I wrote the melody of "Ambulance Blues" by styling the guitar part completely on "Do You Hear Me Now?" I wasn't even aware of it, and someone else drew my attention to it." Thanks to @jaywbabcock.bsky.social, Jansch performed at events organized by Arthur Magazine, most notably a four-night series of concerts called "Arthur Nights" in October 2006, held at the Palace Theater in Los Angeles in October 2006. His appearance was a notable event as he had not performed in the United States in over eight years. Other performers at the event included Devendra Banhart, Espers, and the Buffalo Killers.

Growing up, 'guitar interplay' always made me think of Iron Maiden & Slayer. Fast forward to fifty something me and it has a whole new meaning. Gorgeous pre-Pentangle sketches that are perfect for autumn. Maybe more blues than folk?

In loving memory of Danny Thompson RIP, passed away 23rd September this year. Here he is playing double bass with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated. He later played with John McLaughlin, Pentangle, Richard Thompson (nr) and John Martyn.

Pentangle was one of the coolest bands, zero pop/style, all roots, flagrantly inventive esp given their general terrain. Danny was one of the greatest on bass, cross all genres. You can really see him do his thing here--so much going on much of the time, reduced to a thud whenever it is called for
