Pro tip when starting a lab:
get one of these.

You might only need it occasionally.

But you (and your labmembers) will not regret having it in your arsenal.

The academic job market is cool because you and all your friends and everyone they know are currently applying for literally the same professor jobs.

OK, having spent 3 days reviewing comments from colleagues and adding details in response, I'm now 1200 words over the limit. Now to cut it all back to 3000 words then - easy, right?... #grantwriting #Pilife #AcademicChatter

Not easy to keep those advances coming while being distracted by existential terror and *waves around* everything.

In these unprecedented dark times for American life science and medical research (no less well beyond biomedicine), my coping mechanism is to laser focus on the unremitting and remarkable daily advances, and the fervent hope these will not be slowed or interrupted.

This. Thank you for the rant @harmitmalik.bsky.social.

I'd add that lots of issues in academia don't arise from malice, but from neglect - which takes many forms at all levels:

lack of time, stress, pride, ignorance - but also the privilege to say no without repercussion or accountability.
#PILife
But please dont share this as a mantra for success. If your success comes at the direct expense of your colleagues because they are doing all the work everyone is supposed to share in, it does not make you ‘successful’ it just makes you a horrible colleague.

Also see peer review

Rant over. For now
