"Of far more use than a PhD, practically speaking" is a pretty low bar, TBH...

Not in the UK but late-stage PhD: postdoc like that will give you probably 100+ fantastic candidates. This is how bad it is out there right now.

We are looking for a PhD student to work on an exciting plastid endosymbiosis in microbial eukaryotes. This position involves sampling, exciting microscopy such as CARDFISH, ExM and FIBSEM, single-cell transcriptomics and more. #protistsonsky 1/2

A couple of years ago would have said definitely postdoc (as postdoc positions were much scarcer than funded PhDs, creating a major bottleneck)

But given that A&H PhD funding has now been utterly devastated, it seems pretty much equal now. So whatever works best for the project really...

How do you know if a youtuber is trustworthy?

Based on my PhD research, in this video, I suggest applying the standard of public interest journalism. I'm reposting this to test the new thumbnail. Any thoughts?

Postdoc. It's a really hard thing to see PhD students coming through at the moment. It was always tough but it's Hunger Games level now.

Ponders the benefits of the fast-track AMA. I suspect of far more use than a PhD, practically speaking?

None of my cis male contacts have put it this bluntly but I know _many_ cis men* who clearly had Girl ADHD or Girl Autism.

Often “making it through to PhD before things got weird” is indicative, and what really struck me is that I - ostensibly Late Diagnosed Girl - was prompted,
With the talk about math skills; I have Hyperlexia and Dyscalculia, I taught myself to read when I was 3 and read over 2000 eWPM but I can’t do more than extremely basic arithmetic. I wasn’t diagnosed as Autistic until I was 37, and the doctor told me it took so long because I have “girl Autism.”

It's been such a big week - finishing PhD and social - that the mind and body react. Know it's something I worry about for both my kids as they lose their verbal skills and that's so scary for them - signed the eldest up for a police scheme that should help if the need ever arises. Shutdowns are 💩

Q for UK-based #skystorians and other humanities academics - do you think it is more ethical, given the ponzi-scheme nature of academia, to write a 2/3 year post-doc, or a fully funded PhD into a grant project? Assume you can only have 1 or other.

On this day, 7 years ago, I was in the Paris archive looking for PhD related stuff. Always willing to be diverted though.

Here is the exact time in 1848 when what is now La Roche sur Yon stopped being “Bourbon-Vendée” and reverted to its Republican name of “Napoléon”.

Dear Students, once again, I remind you that I love you and your crazy PhD endeavours, but an abstract is not or ever appropriate when it appears 7 pages in length.

Love me.

It’s one month until I turn 30 and I recently found an old childhood diary listing ten things I wanted to accomplish in my twenties.

Currently, only two goals left:
1. Study for a PhD (in progress)
2. Finish a KFC bargain bucket by myself

I’m glad to see my younger self had big ambitions... 😅
