After summarizing data from various parent and child surveys, Storch and colleagues (2013) reported that 44%–77% of children with ASD have been bullied within a 1-month period, compared with a rate of 2%–17% among typically developing children (Van Roekel, Scholte, & Didden, 2010). In a study by Cappadocia, Weiss, and Pepler (2012), 67% of parents to children diagnosed with high-functioning ASD (including DSM- IV’s AS, HFA, and PDD-NOS) reported that their child had experienced physical, social, verbal, and/or cyber bullying in the preceding month. Of that group, 46% reported to have experienced frequent peer victimization at least once a week. We would like to argue that the unique characteristics of sensation, perception, social awareness, cognition, and global understanding in ASD (Lai, Lombardo, & Baron-Cohen, 2014) may alter what events and stimuli are experienced as traumatic, and subsequently also the nature and severity of posttraumatic sequelae. It may be assumed that individuals with ASD experience unique sources of stress that are potentially traumatic, compared with the general population (Kerns et al. 2015). Unusual fears, difficulties with sensory overstimulation, changes in routine, and social demands (e.g., public speaking or communicating needs to others) are typical sources of stress for individuals with ASD (Gillott & Standen, 2007; Groden et al., 2001; Jansen, Gispen-de Wied, van der Gaag, & van Engeland, 2003; Kerns et al., 2014). In addition, it was found that many individuals with ASD are painfully aware of their differences from others and are hypersensitive to environmental stimuli (White & Roberson-Nay, 2009). For example, Hirvikoski and Blomqvist (2015) found that adults with ASD reported significantly higher subjective stress and poorer ability to cope with stress in everyday life, compared with typical adults. As mentioned before, certain stressful events, such as bullying, do not meet the definition of trauma as described in the DSM-5. Patients reporting these experiences are not formally diagnosed with PTSD, and mostly trauma treatment is not provided. In addition, because of a different sense-making, negative events, which people without autism merely see as unpleasant, can be experienced as upsetting or even traumatic by people with autism. Conversely, disturbing or traumatic events experienced by people without autism may not be experienced as traumatic in people with autism (13). Also, people with autism do not always recognize when situations are unsafe, and they are less inclined to share their experiences spontaneously with others (20). These factors increase the risk of underdiagnosis and under-treatment of traumatic symptoms in people with ASD. This is compounded by a phenomenon called diagnostic overshadowing: symptoms attributed to autism may be stress reactions to traumatic or other adverse events. For example, hyperarousal (a symptom of PTSD) overlaps with autism-related sensory hyperreactivity. Feelings of detachment from others (a symptom of PTSD) partly overlap with deficits in social-emotional reciprocity associated with autism. An impaired ability to mentalize and recognize emotions is observed in both people with PTSD and in people with autism Results Rates of trauma exposure and PTSD symptomatology were significantly higher in the ASD group, compared to the TD group, with deficits in working memory and everyday memory mediating this association. Interestingly, a cumulative effect of trauma exposure on PTSD symptom severity was only found in the ASD group.

JerryRigEverything ® @ZacksJerryRig X.com This is because in 2013 the *definition* of autism was expanded to include Asperger's, CDD, PDD-NOS, and the Autistic Disorder. Numbers went up because the definition changed to include more variants. And testing and awareness of Autism just got better over time. This is insane.

I’ve worked in healthcare for 40 years. I remember PDD NOS. I also remember medical paternalism that didn’t always give full info to people b/c they might handle it well.
And, BTW - there are about 100 products that include acetaminophen…

1st, we call a lot of things autism/autism spectrum disorder (eg Asperger Syndrome, PDD-NOS) than we didn't before. The DSM-V dropped

I am a mother of a 26-yr-old son who was diagnosed at an early age with PDD-NOS and ADHD, inattentive type. Life has been interesting, to say the least. I have been trying since he was 16, to get an updated evaluation for him and to seek services. He has finally agreed.
Now my search is on.

Act III: I really enjoyed all of the dances leading up to the PDD, especially the Spanish Dance. I was kind of surprised that many of the dancers were in character shoes rather than en pointe - not sure if this is the norm or specific to Boston Ballet but I found that interesting.
