A male Pale Snaketail dragonfly, Ophiogomphus severus on Cox Creek Albany, Oregon, USA. Males perch briefly at prominent perches where they can watch for rival males and females to mate with. Occasionally I am able to make a slow approach to capture one with a Nikon D700 and a 200mm Micro-Nikkor.

Pale Snaketail (Ophiogomphus severus) is a #dragonfly of pristine streams and rivers in the American West. Eighteen other North American snaketail species have similar habitat requirements. Pale is the most common residing in/around the Rocky Mountains (DuBois 2010). Stunning in real time.
The Pale Snaketail pictured is a female; green tones are replaced by brown ones if a male. It is perched on small rocks adjacent the Bitterroot River. This is a typical behavior, perches much of time. Hunts low over riffles. It is about two inches long. Compound eyes are sky-blue. Face is light green. The squarish thorax is a pale green usually with no black covering "sutures". The abdomen is yellow on top with a single line of black triangles (front to back) directly below on sides below which is a light green belly. Legs are short and blue-gray in color.

Here is your Sunday Snaketail (Pale Snaketail Dragonfly, Ophiogomphus severus, Montana). Photo from eleven(!) years ago. It's interesting to look back at older shots to compare settings/choices. For instance, I shot this as a jpg, not a raw file. No idea why - but it's a gorgeous insect. 🐙🌿📷
