Migrating my website from Vercel to Hetzner Part 1 - OpenTofu and cloud-init | deadSimpleTech
As of this morning, my website is no longer hosted on Vercel, instead sitting on a Hetzner VM in Helsinki. My databases and similar shall hopefully soon follow, as part of my project of pulling all my infrastructure out of the USA. In the interests of other people who might want to do the same, I thought it would be wise to document what I did and why. So, to work!

@coryodaniel.com question: why didn't you choose Pulumi as your backend of choice instead of TF/OpenTofu? Because license?
But overall, after yet another painful TF adoption, with so much additional automation just to make it do what I want, I came to many of the same conclusions that you mentioned

I’m currently rewriting the way mine does infra. Kubernetes, cross plane, ArgoCD, Kargo, Burrito, OpenTofu. Mix of GitOps to bootstrap things, and pipelines to update image SHAs.
Dragging these people kicking and screaming into the 21st, I feel your pain.

After #OpenTofu, here's the next response to taking #Terraform off open source: #OpenTacos
(switching from Asian to Latin food? that's bold)
The Digger folks launched the project to tackle state management and #RBAC at scale.

I just don't want to throw my hands up in the air and say "well, community forks rarely succeed" when we've seen time and time again that they _can_ succeed with the right momentum. MariaDB, OpenSearch, OpenTofu… This _is_ possible, my friends. We can do better. We need only for people to try.

HashiCorp license change has prompted a fork of their Terraform project called OpenTofu with Linux Foundation as the host. Will be interesting to see which organizations choose each path going forward. And if any other HashiCorp projects get similar forks.

Threatening a fork and taking a community with you may be one of the only ways. I've been thinking about HashiCorp's decisions surrounding Terraform and Vault. Will OpenTofu and OpenBao actually survive as alternate projects? That's my next interesting experiment to follow.

Thrilled to see Terrateam Open Source highlighted here as a solution that makes it simple to deploy a full Terraform/OpenTofu GitOps pipeline with just one config file.

I think if making things as turnkey as possible is the goal, then that's gonna hinge more on IaC like Terraform/OpenTofu or CloudFormation (which is also what I'm working on). At that point "serverless" workers v. a "real" server is an implementation detail.

Imagine being a successful company with a product used everywhere and then deciding to fuck with the license and someone comes up with a fork called "OpenTofu" and it's so successful you have to sell your company to IBM I wouldn't be able to meet a single other human's gaze after losing to OpenTofu

Unlike Terraform, OpenTofu supports encrypting entire state files at rest. This means secrets remain unreadable without a decryption key or passphrase. (But where do we securely store the key or passphrase?)
