When af Klint began creating radically abstract paintings in 1906, they were like little that had been seen before: bold, colorful, and untethered from any recognizable references to the physical world. It was several years before Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and others would take similar strides to free their own artwork of representational content. Yet af Klint rarely exhibited her groundbreaking paintings and, convinced the world was not ready for them, stipulated that they not be shown for twenty years following her death. Ultimately, her abstractions remained all but unseen until 1986. The work deals with ideas of dualities. This was a large part of Theosophical teaching and thought that Hilma af Klint was engaged in. One idea that was teased out in Theosophy was the idea of there being a oneness at the beginning of the world, and that that oneness was then shattered, and that life is a pursuit of the bringing together of the opposite forces that were torn apart at the beginning of creation. And that is also tied to sort of a search for a closeness to divinity. And so we see the tumultuous beginning of things, where there’s a spiraling form of energy that then sort of comes apart. And then we see various organisms and creatures and forms that are sometimes more or less abstract, and sometimes appear to be microscopic, or sometimes appear to be of great scale. She creates words that she puts into these images that aren’t Swedish and are really an invented language that she then really spends much of her life trying to decipher. There are notebooks in which she explores this lexicon that she has created throughout her work, and puts down definitions for some of them, but often many definitions for a single letter or a single phrase. And so it is very difficult to interpret them in a very direct and specific way. Excerpts from the Guggenheim feature insights from Tracey Bashkoff, Director of Collections and Senior Curator.

"They" are of the belief that the signal was sent by some distant space Pluribus, spreading oneness through the galaxy. They are wrong. This cannot be true, because Pluribusing kills some of the population (such as Helen), and they avoid causing death. So why the signal? Well, if you wanted to come steal some planet's resources, wouldn't you love that planet to have inhabitants that were efficiently coordinated, non-violent, and eager to please?
