A new high resolution mapping exercise has revealed hundreds more Antarctic submarine canyons.

The study shows they may have a much greater influence on ocean circulation, ice-shelf thinning and climate change.

“The SMOC plays an essential role in regulating the planet’s heat and carbon. Its disruption could trigger cascading effects on other circulation systems such as the AMOC, with potential consequences for the climate in Europe and other regions.” #oceancirculation #SMOC #climate

Major reversal in #oceancirculation detected in the Southern #ocean, with key climate implications.

The study’s main finding is surprising and alarming: since 2016, a sustained increase in surface salinity has been detected in the region between the polar and subpolar gyres of the Antarctic […]

🌀 Ocean currents & climate

A new study finds that the Atlantic current (AMOC) is unlikely to collapse this century. Using real-world data, researchers predict only a modest slowdown – despite past dramatic headlines.

5/7 "Unlikely isn't impossible," cautions co-author Jonathan Baker. Their models suggest the AMOC could collapse if a strong Pacific circulation developed, but in all scenarios, this remained too weak to counteract the stabilizing Southern Ocean upwelling.

There are so many cool starter packs around here 💙 But I have not seen yet any specifically on the AMOC, so I decided to create one now 🌊 Let me know if you want to be included too!
