The reason they have to keep making Wizard of Oz prequels is if they went *forward* then they'd have to let people know about Ozma, and Hollywood will not, absolutely will *not*, ever allow that to happen

Ozma appeared in Return to Oz (1985)! That’s the only time I remember her appearing in a movie.

I am not trans but my conservative Christian parents *did* let me check out the Oz books from the library when I was 8 and I read them all. Ozma cracked my mind open in ways they had no idea about, from then on I could no longer stomach the regressive gender politics of their church. Powerful stuff!

Why's Ozma so surprised???

Been reading a webcomic that leans way, way more into the trans reading of Ozma. I know it'll never happen as a movie but glad we're in the era it happens in comics

Hello again, #HSS2025! Despite the Sheraton's weird elevator system, I've made it to the Oak Alley Room for a panel on Astronomical Futures during the #ColdWar.

Our 1st speaker, @rebeccacharbon.bsky.social, is discussing the history of #SETI, including Project Ozma.

The Emerald City series handled her pretty great. She's played by the same actress in both forms, made up to look very convincingly like a boy as Tip.

I just found out that Shirley Temple played Tip and Ozma on a tv episode of Shirley Temple’s Storybook series in 1960.

I guess there's a hostile reading of the film where the reason they put Ozma in the sanatorium is because she kept claiming she was a girl

Also the actress who portrayed Ozma in Return to Oz grew up into a pretty heinous transphobe, so that's great too.

The thing that is revolutionary about Baum's handling of Ozma is that it is treated so matter-of-factly.

"Shirley Temple, having reportedly been considered for the role of Dorothy Gale in the 1939 movie musical The Wizard of Oz but passed over in favor of Judy Garland, eventually portrayed Princess Ozma in a 1960 television production of The Marvelous Land of Oz, in which she also portrayed Tip." -wiki

Ozma is MTF trans. It's pretty blatant even in the original 1904 book.

The 2nd book of The Wizard of Oz (The Marvelous Land of Oz) focuses on her. Near the end, she comes out as trans to everyone

I love that movie! It was so cute! Tick-Tock, Jack, the lunch pail tree, the Wheelers and yes it mentioned Ozma. I don’t think a lot of people have read the Wizard of Oz series. I’m sure many don’t even know there are books. I read them when I was a child, my mom had them.

Ozma: I'm not engrossed in LotR.
Ozma, next to me: Commenting on everything going on, and is just NO WAY.

Viola, the main character of my mech comic Digger Engine that I swear I'll draw some day, is a HUUUUGE fan of The Wizard Of Oz specifically because of Ozma. Idk how I'm gonna work it into the story besides just having it on her bookshelf next to The History Of The Luddites, but I will.

It was today with this post that I learned about Princess Ozma. I had no idea.

ozma is the long lost princess of oz, who was cursed since she was a baby to have the body of a boy. she's pretty commonly interpreted as being a trans allegory, which obviously isn't really something big production companies would want to touch these days.

I always enjoyed reading, but discovering OZMA OF OZ when I was 6 turned the smoldering embers of my love for reading into a bonfire.
