#OSMonitoring2025
Question to #OSMonitoring2025 attendees: The monitoring framework/infrastructure is thoughtful/robust/has promise. What are examples of actual policy changes/iterations based on this data? Is it too soon to ask? The investment has been huge -- what are the policy results #OpenScience

@ariannabec.bsky.social - these principles will help us determine if #openscience is ACTUALLY furthering the public good. Monitoring "exclusion" is critical as well. Who is being left behind and why? The gaps/distortions are important to understand. Science in LATAM is a good ex. #OSMonitoring2025

Simon Apartis on case study 2: Used AI to classify WHO is engaging with the open content (IP addresses reviewed by #AI to classify addresses by socio-economic sectors). Showed us what kind of actors access what kind of science.

Discussion re: #PathOS findings #OSMonitoring2025:

Q: What kinds of "impacts" are relevant? Something that helps develop a better tool to sell vs. something that saves lives in clinical work...which is more important? Ismael Rafols asking: www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/staffmemb...

Corporate cooptation of #OpenScience coming up again and again during Q&A. To me, it's not inherently bad but needs to be balanced. Fuels economy/jobs in a macro way, but v. diff in US vs. EU. Are companies engaging enough?

COVID 19 case:
2. When #opencontent attached to high impact pubs --> amplified effect
3.effect is stronger earlier in a crisis

Dataset reuse:
-Choice of #OpenData repo matters for reuse
In SSH better #metadata/IR moderation in IR increases reuse

Why should we use #OSMonitoring2025 principles? @belspo.be Marc says it's good bc there's no concrete solution which actually is good. "These principles might help us engage in collective drafting of new narratives around #OpenScience" (SR: this feels !! - glad it's called out #AI #ResearchSecurity)

I asked the ? about #OpenScience benefitting industry when they don't have to share themselves and @elrod.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy points out that innovation/economic growth benefits ALL, not just companies. He's more concerned about AI!

Which part? I'm making the observation around industry benefiting from OS (big issue in the US context right now). Attribution/confidentiality is coming up in first panel at #OSMonitoring2025

Lessons:
- start with the question, not metric - the policy ? has to be clear then data gap is obvious/solvable: What were the expectations of a particular piece of #OS research. What is the pathway we have in mind? Then you find data that supports

#OpenScience initiatives should be well-defined, relevant and adaptable to diverse contexts; should prioritize use of open, transparent and reproducible info; do NOT want new indicators used as impact proxies (like journal metrics).

Appreciate Natalia @openaire.bsky.social pushing the issue of action: What ACTION is #openScience monitoring enabling?

#AnaPersic, @unesco.org, this work is largely re: sharing best practice/benefits. Not about rankings/policing. The process is as important as the actual outcomes. #OSMonitoring2025
July 8, 2025 at 8:29 AM
#AnaPersic, ?s of inequity need evidence/data to underscore the cost of inequity. The case of what diseases are studied in terms of global populations is a good example (see #Metascience2025 findings). How could #equity evaluation shape where we shift $$ for research?

Q: Which #OSMonitoring2025 principle is most important to your communities? Kamran: Emphasis on Transparency/Reproducibility. This is something @cern.bsky.social is really thinking about. Key component is transparency around shared vocabulary.
July 7, 2025 at 3:00 PM
@ariannabec.bsky.social ALWAYS raises the ? of who is excluded. Kamran: We are always thinking about uptake and who is doing it but who is missing is crucial and Arianna always reminds us of this. #OpenScience in LATAM is taking a hit because of this. #OSMonitoring2025
July 7, 2025 at 3:04 PM
@ismaelrafols.bsky.social we need non-traditional ways of monitoring like the #useCases proposed by #PathOS. #DEI issues relate to collaboration/processes -- not recorded/captured in #OpenScience outputs. It's the HOW where equity erodes."

Michelle Barker: Australasia - many countries don't have national #OpenScience frameworks but DO have #metascience #STS efforts. Will be interesting to see how #OSMonitoring2025 principles influence those efforts.

Good question at #OSMonitoring2025 re: whether #OpenScience practices in the #PathOS case studies were pre or post publication. Answer: they were post-publication bc they were often doing a comparative analysis (content was closed but was open somewhere else).

Where is compliance/policing in #OpenScience work? What ELSE are we doing to go beyond #s? What do we need for capacity building? How do we engage w/ more stakeholders? (SR: this is my ? - who specifically are "stakeholders" they are referencing?)

@plos.org #OpenScience Iain ?: What does success looks like w/ #PathOS recs? A: #OpenAccess IS having the effect we wanted. It's being use in more diverse context. #CitizenScience is working as well - data we wouldn't have gotten any other way. OS IS achieving important outcomes. #OSMonitoring2025

#OSMonitoring2025: PathOS case studies looking to determine:
4. Does repository type influence the reuse of research data -- esp in social sciences?
5. Is French OS platform used beyond academia and by whom?
6. How does Portuguese RCAAP infra affect industry usefulness, visibility, reuse of pubs?

Appreciate how #PathOS is explaining the model mechanisms of #OpenScience at #OSMonitoring2025. Aligns closely with OS work at AIP --> access to outputs, transparency of processes, participation of actors (3 of our 4 pillars).
