Dinner finished, they roll themselves outside into the warm May evening, laughing about how full they are. Once they’re all outside, Lucius claps his hands and announces that he and Pete are going clubbing, if anyone wants to join. (That was quick! Ed’s kinda impressed at Pete’s game.) A few people say they want to go and follow Lucius, and a couple of others claim jet lag and start heading back to the hotel. Stede appears next to Ed. “It’s okay if you want to go with them instead.” He looks down at his shoes, as if he expects that Ed will ditch him. Ed should say no, that he’s tired and wants to sleep. He should not at all go to the intimate cocktail bar with a man that he would like to, but can’t, bring back to his room and rail six ways to Sunday after. Or be railed by, Ed’s not picky. That’s not what Ed says. “Eh, too old for that shit most of the time. You still up for the Royal Vessel?” Stede looks surprised and shyly pleased to be asked, as if he isn’t the tour leader and kinda famous in his own right. “Absolutely! Shall we walk? It’s a nice night.” “Let’s go.”

You know the episode is going to be a bad one when Ed starts going on Google, searching up whatever symptoms he's feeling and what they could be. Shaking, stock still where he lays in bed, still not asleep after hours of trying and failing. It doesn't matter how small the cause is, it could be as simple as a headache, and he's scrambling to WebMD to confirm his worst fears.  Stede's gotten used to this, as sad as it makes him every time. The panic spirals causing insomnia and nausea, the crying, the confusion Ed feels when asked what caused it this time?  "I don't know," he sniffs, and clutches the weighted blanket tighter over him, "I just... I'm dying?" "No you're not, sweetheart." Stede collects Ed in his arms, "It's ok, you're going to be ok." "I just wanna sleep." "I know." "I have work tomorrow." Stede glances at the clock, it's nearly 1, and Ed has to be out the door by 5:30. "No you don't."  "But--" "No buts, you know the rule." "I'm sorry." "Don't apologize," Stede kisses him again, and lets Ed bury his face in his throat. "You can't control these, it's completely out of your power." It's gotten better the past couple years, ever since Ed started on Lexapro and his ADHD meds, the panic attacks have subsided significantly. Episodes like this only happen a spare couple times a year, if that. At the beginning, it seemed like every week was another obstacle to figure out. He's worked with his therapist on this extensively, and Stede knows the protocol for when it gets this bad. "Do you want me to run a bath?" "I'll do it, go back to bed." "No, I insist." Stede likes helping Ed, it's cathartic in a strange way.

“Can you tell me about your hat?” Stede asks one early evening, just as the sun dips low on the horizon. Dust from the wagon train rises in the cooling air, dulling the brilliant streaks of orange and violet above them. They’re getting close to stopping for the night, but there’s still a stretch of road left, so Ed passes the reins into Stede’s eager hands, letting him lead. His palms are grateful for the break. He knows what Stede means, that he’s noticed the way Ed keeps the wide-brimmed hat close, always within reach. But instead of admitting it outright, Ed leans back against the bench as casually as he can. “What d’you mean?” he asks, feigning ignorance, though his pulse quickens. He doesn’t much want to dig into the history of the hat. Too many memories tangled up in it. But… maybe it’s something he can give Stede. Something true about his past, since he’s holding back so much. “You just… seem rather attached to it,” Stede says. “I thought there might be a story there.” The smile he gives Ed is so open, so disarming, that Ed feels the truth clawing its way up before he can stop it. With Stede looking at him like that, so gentle, curious, and unguarded, he thinks he’d confess to anything, even the darkest parts of himself. “It was the last gift my mum ever gave me,” Ed says, his voice rougher than he intends. He clears his throat, but the emotion still tightens it. “She was sick for a long time. I worked every job I could, scraped together what money I could manage to get her the care she needed, but… in the end, it wasn’t enough. So I dunno. I guess the hat just… means a lot to me.” Stede’s expression shifts. Ed braces for pity. That’s what people usually offer when he talks about his mother. But this isn’t pity. Not even close. The only word he can pin to it is care. Genuine, steady, unflinching care. Before he can say anything else, Stede pulls the reins sharply, guiding the wagon off the trail. The oxen shuffle to a stop, dust swirling around them in the cooling air. “Can I hug you?” Stede asks once the wagon is still. His voice is quiet, almost hesitant. Ed has never been so surprised, or so eager, in his life. The thought of Stede’s arms around him, right here, right now, even with his chest raw and his emotions spilling everywhere… It sounds like the most wonderful thing in the world. So he nods. And then Stede is leaning across the bench, pulling him close, arms wrapping firmly around his back. Ed sinks into the embrace, letting himself be held, and thinks—no, knows—this might just be the best hug he’s ever had.

Stede leads him down to the trail to the entrance to the back of the waterfall, explaining as they go that he read about it in Baedeker’s, and telling him a bit of the history of the thing. They find themselves behind the waterfall a moment later. “This is what I wanted to see,” Stede nearly shouts, so he can be heard over the sound of the rushing water. It’s dark and cool in the moss-covered grotto. In silence, the two of them look out at the park through the veil of the falling water. The park is full of people, yet they’re alone here, as if they’ve stepped through the looking glass to another world that’s just their own, existing in parallel to the real world. This world, dark as it is, seems to exist in full color—the warm tones of Ed’s eyes and hair and skin—while the world outside is colorless, like a movie. We only have this one life.

Izzy tried to regulate his breathing — the only half-useful thing his mandatory post-incident counselor had taught him. It wasn't working. "Hey!" Fang's voice was loud and firm and his hand was warm on Izzy's shoulder. Izzy's breathing steadied, and his rage-induced tunnel vision receded. He saw that Fang actually had his other hand on Stede's shoulder. He, too, seemed to be cooling down. "It's Thanksgiving. Let's be sweet, yeah? Besides, you've got business with the wife, Stede." Stede blinked dramatically. "Oh goodness! My plane!" He seemed to forget all about Izzy as he frantically threw his blazer over his arm and scrambled to pick up his luggage. As he trotted to the terminal, arms laden with bags, he called out, "Happy Thanksgiving, Fang!" Fang chuckled to himself, then looked at Izzy. He tilted his head to one side, smiling. The ugly overhead lights made his cheekbones shine. "Baby gays, am I right?" Fang said, raising one eyebrow like he was letting Izzy into a little secret. Izzy felt himself flush. He didn't like this feeling. He didn't like how this guy was getting under his skin, disrupting his routine, and blocking the whole fucking arrivals area of Terminal B so he could swan about giving warm hugs. What was the point of it all, anyway? These were passengers. They were going to come and go and maybe leave a tip and a good review, but other than that, what was in it for Fang? "Move it along," Izzy spluttered at the concrete.

“This is charming!” Stede exclaims as they move towards the horseshoe-shaped bar. “What do you recommend?” “They do barrel-aged Negronis,” Ed says, mentioning their most famous item. Stede must see something on his face. “But that’s not your favorite.” He sounds very sure of that. Ed half shrugs. People who aren’t Stede always assume he otherwise, but Ed has a wicked sweet tooth. How had Stede seen that? “Too bitter,” Ed admits. “You should try one, though.” Stede does, whereas Ed opts for brandy-based drink with chocolate and cherry. It’s got bitter notes, yes, but the sweetness Ed typically craves is there, too. “Mmm, fuck yeah, that’s the stuff,” Ed says, after a sip. He looks up to find Stede watching him with a flare of desire in his eyes. Or is it? Stede looks away quickly, and Ed decides he was seeing things. Everything seems sexier in candlelight. Ed takes another sip of his drink. The sweetness and bitterness are incredibly well-balanced, complementing each other perfectly. Stede takes a sip of his as well. “Delish.” Ed can’t believe he wishes he could fuck someone who says delish unironically.
