a Sal Buscema punch!

Lots of imitators over the years, but I think we all recognize the master when we see it. Always a classic!

“I am Nova. Look! Who else would be stupid enough to carry their press clippings around with him?”

Richard Rider first meets Ben Grimm in the standard nine panel grid format! A fun sequence seeing our human rocket make his way through the FF’s defenses to wake the Thing.

Have a Blue Blazin’ weekend!

Another splash page Saturday and this time we spotlight Nova’s team-up with the Thing against giant green aliens from outer space. Rich’s comment here about the King of Monsters really has me hoping Nova shows up in Godzilla: Infinity Roar.

Since I brought it up in a reply yesterday, we’ll post one of Nova’s features from The Mighty Marvel Fun Book #2 today as we continue celebrating the lead up to the character’s 50th Anniversary in June.

Enjoy “The Maze Called Nova” this fabulous Friday!

“Face to Face” & “Side by Side”

Marvel tries to give Nova a boost in 1977 by teaming him up with the unofficial face of the company, the Amazing Spider-Man, in this two part crossover between their respective series.

Even though he was only Nova for a short time that first stint, I always felt Richard Rider developed a strong friendship with Ben Grimm from their two adventures together. A lot of that was probably due to their both having a strong “never give up” attitude.

“Oh well, it would’ve been nice to maintain some sort of tie with that ship, but I guess I’m destined to stay down here on Earth.”

Marvel Cosmic was my jam in the 70’s thanks to books like Captain Marvel and Warlock. I’d had to wait a bit longer for Nova to get there.

Blue Blazes!

Crazy day at work and it’s not over, so today’s later-than-usual post is another instance of Rich’s infamous catchphrase. This one from Nova’s appearance in the Marvel Two-In-One Annual alongside everybody’s favorite blue-eyed Thing!

“And may the heavens themselves tremble in fear for the war which is soon to begin.”

You know the Sphinx (seen here in his first appearance) means business because he doesn’t settle for robot duplicates of his foes, he gets custom chess board figures made of them!

“Watch yourself now, miss. Keep out of trouble!”

Rich saves his best friend Ginger from being run over and learns a valuable lesson in maintaining a secret identity years before Christian Bale.
Did anyone else go back and read that line a second time in a deeper voice? 😆

Have a Blue Blazin’ Friday!

Zorr the Conqueror, responsible for the destruction of Xandar and the object of Rhomann Dey’s pursuit, had his own homeworld destroyed by Galactus. Don’t feel too much sympathy for him though, he was off the planet invading someone else.

Nova has made such a name for himself that wannabe crimelord Diamondhead constructed a robot duplicate of him to destroy alongside more well known heroes like Thor, Iron Man, and Spider-Man.

Also, little brother Sal takes over as penciller from John Buscema with this issue.

“Another few rounds like that, and it won’t only be my costume that’s black and blue!”

Controversy! The very next issue Nova refers to his costume as both black AND blue! So who’s telling the truth? And who needs to get their eyes checked? Is it Richard Rider or Mike Burley?

“Look! The guy in black’s being creamed!”

In case you were ever wondering, Nova‘s original costume was black not blue, just like Spider-Man’s! It’s true, you can trust high school bully Mike Burley to know his color wheel. #Nova50thAnniversary

“He’s new! Get a picture!”

Artist extraordinaire Alex Ross paints our favorite human rocket on two pages of Marvels: Epilogue as he and writer Kurt Busiek gave us a new look at Richard Rider early in his career as Nova.

Splash Page Sunday!

Richard Rider’s first full page panel came in Nova #2 Page 1 where he is tucked away in the back there, zooming toward the bank window with four armed crooks inside robbing it. The Buscema-Sinnott art on the bad guy in the foreground is outstanding.

HOLY BLUE BLAZES!

That’s right, Richard Rider’s infamous catchphrase didn’t start out as simply “Blue blazes!”, but included the “holy” prefix popularized by actor Burt Ward as Robin in the 1966 Batman TV series! 😂

While Marv Wolfman had done an earlier attempt at the character in the fanzine Super Adventures, calling him first Star, then Black Nova. Marvel readers got their first look at “The Man Called Nova” in January 1976 as part of that month’s Bullpen Bulletins.
