#Newsrooms
“Local media” has become a buzzword for national newsrooms chasing awards. We’re not here for that. We’re here for Mississippians. Your TRIPLED support helps us build a newsroom that listens first, reports deeply and centers the people who need it most. buff.ly/CbJHjq1

2025 was the year newsrooms became a madman’s steno pool. Please do better in 2026.

Almost a year into my fellowship @azcir.org, I’ve been able to pursue stories that dig beneath the surface, examining issues that affect public well-being and often begin in communities overlooked by larger newsrooms. Reporting strengthened by public support is a driving force for change.
It's the last day of our Newsmatch campaign, and we need your help to trigger matching funds by raising another $2,500. Will you help us get there? All donations are double-matched, and new monthly recurring gifts are double-matched at their 12-month value!

I have a signed print of this. Also the final Far Side comic, but I don't know that one's signed. They used to send full size prints to newsrooms as memorabilia.

This is devastating news. The Blocks have been the capitalistic nightmare scenario for stewardship over journalism in Pittsburgh: the Post-Gazette strike broke apart one of the best newsrooms in the business, and now they're shuttering our alt-weekly just a few years after buying it. Awful people.
Well folks, some news. Ownership is folding @pghcitypaper.com. I wish I could say this was more surprising. I'll be on the lookout for new roles while I continue to teach and hopefully find places to publish some stories I haven't finished. In the meantime, I'm all ears for opportunities.

There's still a certain charm to local #newsrooms. Mainly dedicated people reporting on and writing about their community, often for small salaries. We're not all the WaPo or NYT.
You've got to love #journalism to do the work. This photographer is documenting it.

I keep waiting for permission or for some sort of sign to organize a version of Longshot Mag and in 2026 I'm just going to email newsrooms in NYC with enough office space on a weekend a bunch of scrappy people can come in and produce a themed on-demand magazine again: youtu.be/Kk2OjFTVdCA?...

I wish people took me seriously when I raised alarm bells 3 years ago about what was going on with heritage foundation proxies going into newsrooms and doing what Weiss did

Another example of power imbalance is some hack job saying, “dont listen to the person raising alarm bells”
As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:
Watching Bari Weiss Murder Investigative Journalism at CBS
Notes from someone who's withstood White House demands to stop an explosive story—and who once even had a 60 Minutes piece spiked

Snippets of the news reached me on WhatsApp and I commissioned the Odisha-based video journalist Rakhi Ghosh, who walked through farms and forests to reach Sabar’s home in Khordha district. PBS/NPR is the only respected news room in the country (USA). Thank goodness in Canada we still have newsrooms that actually cover the news.
