I think one of the biggest mistakes that a lot of (mostly white) autistic people make is cordoning off anything they think is remotely, distinctly, and uniquely autistic—“autistic burnout,” “autistic masking,” “special interests,” echolalia, stimming, etc.—from everything they think is remotely, distinctly, and uniquely allistic because it continues to make the racist, white supremacist, antiBlack, misogynistic, queerphobic, transphobic, ableist, classist, eugenicist, etc. point that autistic people are not fully human, that we have/suffer from a disorder/condition, that there is a way to fix/cure us, and that allistic equals neurotypical equals normal. Not situating these things within the larger context of things that all people experience, especially other marginalized people struggle with and against, and not making the point that the reasons why we experience and engage in these things—“autistic masking” is nearly identical to being in the closet as a queer and/or trans person with the exception that racism, white supremacy, antiBlackness, misogyny, ableism, classism, and eugenics are the secondary causes for autistic people to be in the closet whereas racism, white supremacy, antiBlackness, misogyny, homophobia, queerphobia, and the patriarchy are the primary causes for queer and trans people masking their being queer and/or trans; children use echolalia to learn how to speak, randomly repeating a line from a song that’s stuck in your head is an example, and repeating something funny someone said is an example of echolalia as well, and it’s important to note that echolalia is both a sign of normal childhood development as well as a sign/symptom of a neurodevelopmental disorder (which makes absolutely no sense); all marginalized people are at risk for experiencing burnout because of the pressures and lack of adequate support and accommodations for them in society just for both different and intersecting reasons (because a financially stable cishet white autistic man will not experience burnout for the exact same reasons that a poor queer and trans Black person will); both autistic people and allistic people flap their hands when they’re excited; both autistic people and allistic people are capable of becoming so wrapped up in an interest that their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing suffers for it; hell, even stimming is not unique to autistic people as, for instance, if you swim when you’re stressed or need to think, if you run to relieve stress, if you play with your hair when you’re nervous, if you bite your nails when you’re anxious, etc., you are stimming—may be different for both systemic and individual reasons does more harm than good because it argues the case for autistic people’s humanity from and in favor of psychopathological viewpoint of autistic people rather than from a perspective informed by neurodiversity in any meaningful way.
