The Egyptian Vaults in the Glasgow Necropolis. Designed by David and James Hamilton and built in 1837, unlike the surrounding mausoleums, theses vaults were created as a temporary resting place for corpses while their graves and tombs were being prepared.

My photos show four ornate Visigothic bronze belt buckles arranged in a 2 x 2 grid. Each buckle has a rectangular plate decorated with colourful glass (red, blue, green) inlaid into metal cells using cloisonné technique, and a chunky curved metal loop and prong. They adorned leather belts which Visigothic women wore over a tunic (probably) as a status symbol. Excavated between 1942 and 1949 by Antonio Molinero from the necropolis of Duratón near Segovia, Spain. They are on display at the Casa del Sol Museum in Segovia.

The cast iron gates, created by the phoenix foundry, feature pairs of inverted torches, still lit, representing the earthly life extinguished, while the eternal life continues. Above the entrance is a winged hourglass, a memento mori and a reminder that life is fleeting.

"Love Laid in Stone" (Kodak Professional Plus-X 125) Oval crypt. The words have faded — but the stone remembers. 2022.08.11 This is the crypt of Emilia Bykovskaya (1801–1841) — an oval chapel built by her husband, architect Mikhail Bykovsky, after her sudden death in childbirth. Here, stone is not just material — it’s the shape of grief. The French and Latin inscriptions are nearly erased, but the structure still speaks. Even in decay — it remembers. P.S. The architect also dedicated to her an annex to a Catholic church — but it didn’t survive.
