not many know this but the "NS" in "NSAID" stands for NextStep

The first web browser, the WorldWideWeb, was both a browser and WYSIWYG editor – "there was no difference between the author and the reader". We ended up with "passive browsers" when WorldWideWeb was ported from the NeXTSTEP to other OS's.

RT @kcase: Before Pages by Apple, there was Pages by Pages (in 1993, for NeXTSTEP 3.0):

Pinstripe only got that far because the scan lines on CRTs let it slide. As for Aqua… the NeXTstep vs Mac into Rhapsody into OSX certainly had some warts in how the UI evolved during that time. Gradients! You’re talking about gradients!

The New York Post lezen. (People magazine: ook toegestaan.)
The US State Department is forcing all of its employees to cancel subscriptions to any Trump-unfriendly media.

Today I learned that the historical AppKit Release Notes document has notes going all the way back to NeXTStep 3.3. It’s fun to see Windows-specific caveats about NSWindow and NSTextView. developer.apple.com/library/a…

Reminds me of when Apple tried to rewrite Mac os in the 90s and failed. Instead they bought Next and recycled NextStep.

The NeXTStep version of MacOS has been in development for nearly 30 years and on the market for nearly 25 years. One would think that Apple's developers would have figured out how to correctly manage multiple display drivers in that length of time.

(ObNitpick: Some Argue that what happened was that Apple got reverse-acquired by Jobs' failed NeXT company to get Jobs back, but the usual history is that Apple bought NeXT, turned the NeXTSTEP OS into Mac OS X, and experienced a renaissance.)

Looks like NeXTSTEP

Well, NeXTstep is the software layer, not the hardware layer. When they switched to OpenStep they stopped making hardware and just supported Intel, PA-RISC, Sparc, and Motorola CPUs. Current macOS (and iOS) is a more advanced kernel, etc, but still very similar overall.
