#NPIS
And no, vaccines aren't the response to a mutating virus like this, but assuring no-infection and deterring onward transmission... and that entails NPIs, respirators mainly, but also ventilation and filtration.

"Immunity debt" was a fraudulent PR campaign against NPIs, that the New York Times actively promoted.

Great points. As you say, it’s not an argument against interventions, you just have to maintain them. It’s also not an argument that temporary control measures aren’t worth it. Covid NPIs were always going to be temporary, but the lives saved until vaccines was worth the surge in endemic viruses.

If we are ever going to be able to catch up with SARS2 in the way we have for flu, then we must ⏬prevalence and evolution via both vaccines & infection resilience/NPIs, or it will just go on 4 years.
IMHO, we could do a lot better re flu, RSV = "NHS pressure" too.

The vaccines have never stopped infection nor transmission. Did these researchers not know this? The very minute we dropped NPIs, so-called "breakthrough" infections became commonplace. Because the vaccines never drove down transmission, vaccines PLUS NPIs did that.

The gravitas & clear consequences of #LongCOVID mean that governments may finally have to mitigate against #COVID infections/reinfections with ALL the #NPIs they have successfully resisted implementing up until now (because votes... ).

Happy that I have finally published this work at @epljournal.bsky.social which calculates the distribution of pandemic extinction times using only NPIs (yes lockdowns) & predicts that the covid pandemic could have been eliminated in a time of order months! iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

1/ Contrary to recent claims by two political scientists, new work by @adrianraftery.bsky.social & Nick Irons estimates that COVID non-pharmacuetical interventions (NPIs) saved an estimated 860,000 lives in the US *in 2020 alone*.

Optimal pandemic control strategies and cost-effectiveness of COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical interventions in the United States - BMC Global and Public Health
Background Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a trade-off between the health impacts of viral spread and the social and economic costs of restric...

US COVID-19 school closures were not cost-effective, but other non-pharmaceutical interventions were, study finds

Pre-vaccine, governments relied on NPIs: masks, distancing, testing, tracing, closures.

School closures averted 77,200 deaths, cut transmission 8.2%, but may cost $2T in future losses.

This is the same type of three dimensional chess argument they’ve used to undermine infection control bit by bit, first with NPIs and now vaccines. You can’t reasonably look at the risk factors outside of acute death and hospitalization and say this is smart.

A coalition with OCS, specifically with CSBG might be beneficial. They're measuring national performance indicators (NPIs) already which focus on: Education, Income & Asset Building, Employment, Housing, Health, & Community level initiatives using ROMA--Results Oriented Management & Accountability.

They have, recently, advocated against using NPIs (universal masking) against COVID-19.

Anyone that is at all concerned about staying safe should absolutely not listen to such a person.

It's annoying to have to do it, but I immediately block anyone spreading such disgusting misinformation.

#ZiB2

A good summary about mRNA vaccines.
To protect vaccine efficacy against an RNA virus like sars2, there is need to add other measures to reduce contagion - aimin to zero -, thus preventing the virus from evolving too fast into other strains. How? NPIs. One very important is masking with respirators.
mRNA

A molecule that is found in cells, one of the many ‘workhorse’ molecules in a cell that does its job and is then broken down into sub-units for re-use.

The cell’s ‘reference copy’ of genetic information is kept in the cell’s nucleus, in the form of DNA.

I think a lot of that depends on how deadly it is for children—something that I think made people a lot more willing to ditch NPIs and even vaccines last time.

NPIs or we are doomed.
December 21, 2024 at 7:05 PM
That’s actually not what I said at all if u read my thread. Vaccines are essential protection against severe outcomes for ppl who have been infected, but masks/ventilation are far more effective than current vaxx at preventing transmission. That’s why layered NPIs actually support vaxx efficacy
November 15, 2023 at 4:16 AM
the Arthur Chu argument (vax is bad because it makes ppl lax with NPIs) is the same as the argument against hormonal birth control. ultimately the goal is to control behavior by undermining effective prophylactics.

As ever, useful commentary Adam. What would be the essentials for better research into the effects of NPIs on outbreaks and what role does govt and WHO have? There is likely to be a resolution at the next WHA proposed by Norway, Brunei and others on PHSM / NPI research - input welcome

of the justification for JVCI only giving the vax to >65, HCW & immunosuppressed.

Which means we *really* need NPIs (Non Pharma Mitigations) like air filters, masks and voluntary isolation when sick.
October 28, 2024 at 7:35 AM
So we could seek to be in a better position of control by improving air quality through ventilation, filtration, UR-UVGI, FarUV, NPIs, testing, isolation, sick pay etc.
Seen as too costly.
Many pushbacks.
Needs time, focus & investment.
We could reduce transmissions this way.

I'll add that this is looking strictly at reproductive ability, disease progression, and mortality, so discounting the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as masks. The picture would in reality be more complex with other inputs (Mx, status of healthcare system, vax rate/efficacy)
