Rereading the transit bill language, saw a provision I don’t think has been discussed much. It forces Metra to ditch its noncompete agreement with NICTD, meaning you could take South Shore trains for trips that start and end in Chicago. I suspect Rep. Buckner added it. @starlinechicago.bsky.social

oh yeah i forgot i made this account specifically to have somewhere to talk about the south shore

i made this chart last night because a friend of mine was struggling to remember what the stripes on Ph3 looked like (and i kinda went overboard (oops))
A chart showing paint schemes applied to the Nippon Sharyo built Single Level Dual Cab EMUs. From top to bottom, on the left column: Blank (never like this, afaik) Phase 1 (as delivered) Phase 1 (RTA) (as delivered) Phase 1 (NICTD) Phase 1 (NICTD, late) note: some retained the earlier white NICTD logo, but the ownership plate removal was (practically) consistent Phase 2 (nictd, for 1992 dedication day(?)) note: some retained the late NICTD Ph1 orange logo, most were whited out though. also possibly only a small handful got this one? unsure. trailer cars were built in this livery Phase 3, Single Cab cars were delivered in this livery Phase 4 (early) Phase 4 (late) note: as far as i'm aware, "early" and "late" are just really inconsistent, as some early Ph4 cars are done up like the late ones, whereas some late ones are done up like the early ones. There might be a method to the madness, but i have yet to discover it so far. From top to bottom, on the right column: Note for Ph1 units painted/modified after their "as delivered" looks: they were WILDLY inconsistent. like. so much so that i genuinely cannot even fathom writing down every single tiny variation they might've had. so this list is "non-exhaustive" because of them and them alone i'm not gonna lie. another note for Ph1 units: later on, the maroon would fade to a sorta pinkish red, causing this: which can easily be mistaken as "Oops! All Orange" this sometimes would compound with the south shore logo on the end fading too, which would then look like this: rather interestingly, the ends of the carbody would usually be in better condition than the sides in terms of how faded they were. note for Ph3 units: sometimes the NICTD logo was just. Gone. Missing, even. I have yet to figure out why this was the case note for Ph4 units: sometimes (very inconsistently) they will have a white outline to their South Shore Line logos (sometimes on both the sides and ends, sometimes only the ends, sometimes neither.)

If anything I could see it going the other way: if they figure out interagency fares, I could see NICTD wanting to turn all their off-peak trains at Kensington, with timed transfers to ME-UP trains running express between Kensington and Hyde Park.

The end of the Ft. Wayne Sub at Tolleston is less than a mile and a half from the NICTD at Gary-Chicago Airport. Brightline might not mind using Randolph St. instead of Union Station.

but yes, IIRC the dual-mode option was seriously considered 15 years ago when an branch to Valpo over CSX trackage was part of the plan.

after CSX killed that idea, NICTD had no reason not to electrify the remaining (new-build) branch to Dyer.

INTERLINING: With multiple thru-running lines sharing the same infrastructure, trains can be interlined to have their schedules coordinated to have Rapid Transit-style headways through the urban core, from downtown to Hyde Park. Regional Benefits CITY OF CHICAGO: Interlining allows for trains every 15 minutes or better at most city Metra stations, including CTA-like 7.5-minute headways between downtown and Hyde Park. CrossTowners also provide for single-seat or single-transfers from the entire South Side to O'Hare and job markets in the north and northwest suburbs. COOK COUNTY: By serving existing Metra stations more frequently and by providing new direct connections through downtown, intra-county trips are much more convenient for transit users. With CrossTowner service reaching as far as Elmhurst, Blue Island, and Harvey, working-class communities throughout the county would see improvements. COLLAR COUNTIES: With CrossTowner regional rail serving more local stations closer to the urban core and inner suburbs, existing Metra service to and from the collar counties can operate at higher speeds with fewer stops. For the outer suburbs, every train can be an express train on eight Metra lines.
