My granddad served 6th Morayshire Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders 18th August 1914 - 19th May 1919. Taken POW at Arras 30th September 1917 & repatriated 20th December 1918

East Monaughty 1980. Clearfelling soon took this forest off the fixture list. I would have spent a lot of time on an EUOC bus to get there. Premarked maps were a well loved luxury at this time.

A 1:15000 scribed orienteering map of the forest behind Pluscarden Abbey, Morayshire. The forest is runnable with a lot of clear felled coupes. The clear fell symbol used is a yellow and white diagonal striping screen which was used a fair bit at this time. A small sheet and a very attractive map. M19 - M35 course overprint.

#31DaysofGraves #Day24 #UnusualAnimal Found in the 18thC in the grounds of nearby Dyke parish church, "Rodney's Stone" features a carving of the Pictish Beast, an unidentified animal found on numerous stones around Scotland, variously thought to be a dolphin or an elephant. More at: buff.ly/B6OfAKF
A large upright stone slab is supported by two metal rods. On its face are carved Pictish symbols. Two are snake-like creatures with heads resembling dragons. Below them is the Pictish Beast, shaped like an elephant but with a very long nose rather than a trunk. Below it is the double-disc symbol, a bit like two hand mirrors tied together by their handles. It now stands in the grounds of Brodie Castle in Morayshire.

A distant cousin, James Leslie Paul, was a passenger on the ship "Aberdeen" when he died, from TB, aged 33, and was buried at sea, round about the Cape of Good Hope. He is commemorated on this stone in Alves Kirkyard, Morayshire. #31DaysofGraves #Nautical
