Perhaps related, some abolitionists went straight from the Civil War to genocide in the West, with one of the most notorious incidents led by Methodist minister and strident abolitionist John Chivington, under the command of another abolitionist, Gov. John Evans. bsky.app/profile/hist...

LOTS of progressive Protestant churches exist.

I grew up in one, from 1970-74.

Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, even Presbyterian & Baptist churches have progressive elements.

As do Catholics, even.

LOTS of churches are integrated now, have women pastors & bishops.

The buildings were designed by Thomas Moore. He was also responsible for the gorgeous Monkwearmouth Station, Sunderland’s East End Orphanage and the Monkwearmouth Primitive Methodist Chapel so certainly influential in what people imagine as Sunderland’s architectural fabric.

My aunt was in a Methodist Homes (MHA) home. Not-for-profit. Paid their staff more than others in the locality. It was a wonderful place. Truly caring. That's how it should be.

The Methodist Churches have weekly community dinners (as they always do). Several local communities are running/organizing repair cafes. the economy is terrible, our federal leaders aren't doing anything to help, but local governments and ordinary people are stepping up to make things better.

My wife grew up active in the United Methodist Church (the closest to their house) and while she's no longer religious, you can tell that it helped her develop some kind of actual theory of the mind and the world. Evangelicals are just operating purely on bad vibes

I had been very naive up to that point. He lost a whole community when he joined a 'Bible believer' church. Never heard of a church with no committee to visit the sick, no charities at all. Most religions have local AND global charities--Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, Jewish. They don't though.
