I leaned over and took photos of a plant I wasn't familiar with. When I got home, I discovered this little guy. Centers of flowers are always good places to look for insects and spiders.

Mecaphesa asperata, the northern crab spider, is a species of crab spider in the family Thomisidae, found in North and Central America, and the Caribbean. It is a species of the ‘flower spiders’, so-called because they generally hunt in similarly coloured flowers for visitors such as bees and flies.

a composite flower with a dozen or so hot pink ray florets surrounding a cone of dozens of brown disk florets. around a dozen and a half of the disks spaced roughly equally around the outside series of disks in the cone are blooming, growing fused stamen tubes capped with bright yellow anthers. a few of the disks on the puter series are showing their bifurcated & curling red styles. a handful of ants are crawling around the petals. a tennessee coneflower with hot pink rays and green+red disks facing to the upper left. a few green, hairy bracts poke out from behind the rays, and the flowerhead is supported by a thick green stem covered in white hairs. the back sides of the rays are also kinda hairy. a swift crab spider (Mecaphesa celer) sitting right on the cone of this flower; this female is bright lemon yellow and quite large! particularly in comparison to the male spider hanging upside-down onto one of the rays just behind her. this little guy is light brown with darker brown spots. tennessee coneflower growing in its only natural habitat, the limestone cedar glades of the nashville basin in middle tennessee. one hot pink flowerhead is in full bloom, standing erect on a tall hairy stem; another is rearing up & getting ready to go. they basal rosettes of long, thin, & hairy green leaves, which also occasionally occur though sparsely on the flower stems especially closer to the ground. the coneflowers are growing in a little green patch within a larger expanse of gray gravel & fieldstones.

That's a +1 from me regarding natev. @sarahmackattack.bsky.social are you making iNat observations of these photos? I started doing that to teach myself about the wildlife I see as well as keeping a journal of when and where I saw them. Sometimes it takes years to get an ID.

Spider dump! These guys use the goldenrod as their hunting ground some of them actually turn yellow to blend in. They mostly have moths in their mouths but a couple of them are snacking on mosquitos. A mix of genus Misumenoides and Mecaphesa.
