A prompt start as Dharapani is a fair old hike. And a cold one as it took time for the sun to creep over the higher mountains surrounding us. Slowly the landscape began to relent from the starkness of high altitude and some colour began to penetrate the eye and brain.

Started the day with a descent into the Machha Kola, then up via Singla, along and crazily steep down to join the classic circuit at Khorlabeshi. The days ahead would see us wedded to the Budhi Gandaki river and gorge, delights yet to come.

The schedule had us making the leap from Samagaon via Samdo directly to Dharamsala at the base of Larkye La, usually a 2 day effort. Sudip was more than happy with our acclimatisation but even so, we were off and out early to ensure a sensible finish time. Chilly start.

The schedule had us making the leap from Samagaon via Samdo directly to Dharamsala at the base of Larkye La, usually a 2 day effort. Sudip was more than happy with our acclimatisation but even so, we were off and out early to ensure a sensible finish time. Chilly start.

Shovelling down muesli at 04.00 in minus temps isn’t the best start to the day. But you need calories for the uphill. A quick pack of the sac and off we went to Larkye La by head torch. Cold for sure but not extreme. 4 layers on top, Icebreaker tights under mountain trousers.

Beyond Chokkang, the #TsumValley widens out somewhat giving a more spacious feel. We pressed on to Nile, but found no open lodges so retreated about 0.5 of a mile to Chule.

With Sange Sherpa otherwise engaged in Upper Mustang, Gokul Thapa had introduced us to a new guide, Sudip Risal. With Sudip came Chatur Lama, a singing, dancing human dynamo to carry the big bags. We were straight into it out of Barpak gaining height f not too steeply.
