Then there's the Black Christians.

The Kingdoms of Makuria, Nobadia, and Alodia (modern Egypt and Sudan) were Christian from about the 4th to 5th centuries CE.

Black Christians are described making pilgrimages to religious sites in Europe, including King Moses George, circa 12th century.

You also had the medieval Nubian kingdoms around at this time, Makuria and Alodia, which were founded sometime in the 500s and lasted to the 1400s. It was a rich, literate and fascinating culture that is known by few.

Makuria was a Nubian kingdom in what is now northern Sudan and southern Egypt.
Muslim invaders recorded details of the accuracy of the Nubian archers, they were referred to as Eyesmiters due to the rumoured ability to hit their targets eyes through the eye slits of the helmet.

A battle in the mid-7th century between Makuria and newly Islamized Egypt that our earliest records say was a Muslim loss but later ones declare a Muslim victory (with no Nubian writings to counter either).

I love these reconstructions of clothing worn by the ruling elite of Makuria (a medieval kingdom in what's now s. Egypt/n. Sudan). Made with historically accurate fabrics & dyes, they give us a sense of the visual language of power in medieval Sudan—will be using these in my teaching next semester!

Beliefs of that kind are quite sticky (cf northern Sudan more than two centuries after Arabisation and Islamisation).
