Geomagnetic storms absolutely affects birds' magnetoreception

They call it "magnetoreception."

Do you, you, as a person, understand magnetoreception?

Because I have asked so many people, and everyone eventually caves and says some form of, "it's magic."

Why would men have magnetoreception and not women?
November 9, 2025 at 7:48 PM
As a compass needle trembles, seeking true north, so too must we oscillate between action and stillness to calibrate our path.

Some creatures hav geospatial intelligence skills. They use magnetoreception to detect earths magnetic fields for orientation navigation. Invisible to clueless humans, many creatures evolved specialized biological mechanisms to perceive geomagnetic info. Migratory birds, sea turtles, certain fish.
October 26, 2025 at 5:56 AM
Huh, I wonder if they basically just kept track of their orientation while walking into the room, or are somehow (possibly human magnetoreception?) capable of sensing it without visual reference

Do you know if any studies about that have been done?
October 23, 2025 at 6:28 PM
There are things that animals do naturally (echolocation, magnetoreception, deep diving, etc) that humans, with all our technology, STRUGGLE to replicate.
How intelligent all other animals are in comparison to humans is so cool and humbling from octopuses to peregrine falcons, etc.

Shit, I watched ants hide a dead body of a fly until the fly that was looking for that said fly left.

Humans really gotta get off their pedestal, they lapping us lowkey

3rd anniversary of this paper: Karwinkel et al. 2022 "A magnetic pulse does not affect free-flight navigation behaviour of a medium-distance songbird migrant in spring" in JEB, where we tried to reproduce old studies on magnetoreception, but found no effects. A thread:

A fun one! In which we discuss...

- the deep evolutionary history of birds
- sci-fi-sounding structures in bird brains
- the perennial puzzle of magnetoreception
- seasonal changes in bird (and some mammal) brains
- unihemispheric sleep
- gynandromophry
- the extractive foraging hypothesis

etc.!
Bird brains aren't the same as mammal brains. They took their own twisty evolutionary path. So what can they teach us about brains in general?

A lot, it turns out.

Just one of the topics discussed in our latest episode, w/ @evoneuro.bsky.social & Georg Striedter!

Quantum biology is on the rise.
Other than photosynthesis, researchers are investigating quantum effects in avian magnetoreception, olfaction, and enzyme catalysis.
Quantum processes in biology could potentially make artificial systems better.
Solar cells, sensors, and molecular machines could be ..

For me, this is just the beginning.
From my PhD on cryptochromes & magnetoreception → to my postdoc focus on viral vectors & retinal physiology, this journey is about building the tools to ask new questions.
Grateful to my collaborators & mentors 🙏

En premier il y a bien sûr les cryptochromes, qui sont impliqués dans la magnétoréception des oiseaux :

Researchers Explore Radical Pair Mechanisms In Cryptochrome Flavoproteins For Animal Magnetoreception
Research suggests that a light-sensitive protein, utilising spin-dependent chemical reactions and potentially enhanced by other molecules, may allow migratory animals to sense the Earth’s magnetic field, offering a possible explanation for their remarkable navigational abilities
