On this date: November 11, 1985. Forty years ago today, during their “miracle year,” Hüsker Dü held an event at Nicollet Studios where they signed to Warner Brothers. Jon Bream wrote about the deal later that week in the Star Tribune.
4C. Friday/November 15/1985//Minneapolls Star and Tribune Husker Du signs a major record deal Husker Du has become the latest Twin Cities-based act to land a major record deal this year. The rock trio signed with Warner Bros. Records Monday in a ceremony at Nicollet Studios. That's the big label with Prince, ZZ Top and Fleetwood Mac on its ros-ter, not a custom label like those that feature Don Henley, the Talking Heads or Sheila E. The Huskers join Jesse Johnson (A&M Records), Melvin James (MCA), Alexander O'Neal (Tabu), the Jets (MCA), the Replacements (Sire), the Family (Pais-ey Park), TaMara & the Seen (A&M), Mazarati (Paisley Park) and the Metros (MTM) as local acts that have landed major national contracts this year. No official announcements have been made of Limited Warranty's signing with Atlantic Records or the Suburbs' with A&M, but those deals are being completed. "I always liked them (the Huskers, who have been regarded as a hardcore or punk-rock group), but not for Warner Bros.," said Karin Berg, the talent scout who brought Husker Du, Dire Straits, Laurie Anderson, the Roches and Marshall Crenshaw to Warners. "With 'Zen Arcade' (the Huskers' 1984 two-record set) | started thinking they were for Warners." A longtime fan of the band's rec-ords, Berg saw the Huskers perform twice in New York, where she is based. But she wanted to see them away from the hype and hoopla, so she caught them earlier this year in San Francisco, then went backstage and told the musicians: "I want to sign you, Get a lawyer. I can't talk to you anymore." Husker Du hooked up with George Regis, a former Minneapolis rock critic who's now an entertainment lawyer in New York with a firm that represents Pat Benatar, Artists United Against Apartheid and the Re-placements, among others. He worked out the details with Warner Bros. for Husker Du. What does the contract call for? "It has the three most important words," said Husker guitarist Bob Mould, who doubles as group man-ager: "Artist is producer." Said Berg, "It's great to sign a band that I like to listen to. One thing ! appreciate about Husker Du and the Replacements is that their success has been incidental. They've just done what they do, and the people have found them." In other words, these bands are what they eat, and people's taste buds have changed, but the bands haven't changed to suit people's tastes. Look for the Huskers' first Warner Bros. album in April.
