#MLSPA
I heard some exec from FCC this morning talk about summer concerts, friendlies with English teams and selling players. It's absolutely all about money. I hope the MLSPA takes full advantage of their opportunity.
November 14, 2025 at 6:32 PM
No, they should have spent half a decade preparing for this switch and working with all parties involved, like the J league is doing. Not pushing this through ham fisted in two years. How's that MLSPA approval coming along? Fan sentiment? Sponsors? This is going to be a complete disaster.
November 14, 2025 at 5:40 PM
If that's the case, then why are talks with the MLSPA "teetering?" By far my biggest issue with this whole thing is how they are doing it; cramming it through in a ridiculously short time-frame. See Jason's blog post how he compares this to how Japan is doing it: bsky.app/profile/rapi...

What do the players think? MLSPA? How are they going to handle 'second preseason' after 6-8 weeks off?!?!
November 14, 2025 at 7:34 AM
There won't be any short notice surprises.

Teams will drop their schedules with time to flip the field. Nothing to flex or change up due to MLS Playoffs or a make up game.

7:30 time slot is dead.

When to rescheduled games will be a thing the MLSPA will have to force.

MLS is to move to a summer-to-spring calendar, in line with major European leagues, from summer 2027 🚨

Seasons will begin in July, have a winter break longer than the month January and conclude in May. MLS said negotiations with the MLSPA over the transition are ongoing 📆
November 13, 2025 at 10:36 PM
With ESPN colleague @lizzybecherano.bsky.social …Why #MLS is changing to a summer/spring schedule with a winter break. And also why not everyone is convinced it’s a good idea. And then there are the pesky talks with the #MLSPA.

Why MLS is changing to summer-spring schedule with a winter break
MLS will soon adopt a schedule that will run from the summer through the spring, but how will the league manage matches in frigid winters?

Of all the cherry-picked fake statistics in this world, this is impressively insulting.

What consultant group did the league hire to select a panel of "league soccer viewers" to produce this result.
November 13, 2025 at 9:48 PM
This is a very interesting situation for the MLSPA. Some may recall that the last round of CBA negotiations, held in the shadow of the COVID pandemic was... rugged, reportedly.

Reminder of what MLSPA exec dir Bob Foose said at the time:

MLS moving to this new schedule is absolutely the right and necessary move, but I really hope they have their ducks in a row to make this as smooth a transition as possible and the news about the MLSPA negotiations (and this) makes me worry about this.
It really hits you in the face how badly they dropped the ball that this isn’t starting in July of 2026. IT WAS RIGHT THERE
As part of the shift, the 2027–28 MLS regular season will kick off in mid-to-late July 2027 and conclude with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in May 2028.

MLS will observe a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, with no league matches scheduled in January.
November 13, 2025 at 9:30 PM
the long wait for an announcement is finally over ... but "MLS is continuing to work with the MLSPA to finalize agreement on a transition plan"
November 13, 2025 at 9:28 PM
Doesn’t the MLSPA have to approve this, first?!?
November 13, 2025 at 9:26 PM
MLS says it is still working with MLSPA on a transition plan.

Also in the announcement, “MLS will introduce a new regular season format that blends elements of the global game with North American sports traditions.”

Expect to see the creation of divisions of teams in 2027.
November 13, 2025 at 9:25 PM
However ...

"MLS is continuing to work with the MLSPA to finalize agreement on a transition plan."
November 13, 2025 at 9:25 PM
From ESPN colleague @lizzybecherano.bsky.social ...MLS approves calendar change, but there's no agreement yet with the MLS Players Association on the switch. One source described the talks between #MLS and the #MLSPA as "teetering".

I’d assume it’s season tickets and MLSPA sign-off. Shorter time demands gives MLSPA way more leverage, and it requires a ton of changes to the CBA, not to mention likely a 6-moth extension on the back-end of the term so there’s not a mid-season strike in 27/28.
November 13, 2025 at 6:25 PM
As the WNBPA signs an 30-day extension with the WNBA, the NFLPA, MLSPA, NBPA and MLBPA have all come out in support of the players.
