In creating a counterpart for Aster, he thinks of the other things he's seen in the world. His other creation, like Aster, will need a way to take in essence in order to continue living. This time, he chooses the method of bringing others pleasure rather than pain, though apparently Aster's bite is quite euphoric for those who receive it. To his consternation, the incubus and the vampire don't seem to get along at first, though Morvay was created to balance Aster out. But as he observes them, it seems that they are happy with their existence all the same. Morvay, too, yearns to be near Huey and to please him; it frustrates him, Huey can tell, that he cannot fulfill his purpose by making his master feel carnal pleasure. Huey simply doesn't have the necessary equipment for that.

This gave me the chance to write Aster & Huey interacting, something I had never done. So I made them bake. 🥧
Huey met his eyes. Between his eyebrows was a slight crease in his strange pale skin. He didn’t understand. Despite his age, Huey had a child’s innocence about some aspects of life, and he took things at face value. Aster spotted a cookbook an arm’s length away and glanced at the open page. Sure enough, an illustration depicted a tart exactly like the ones Huey had assembled. “It doesn’t have to be done exactly like the cookbook shows,” Aster said gently. He put one of the fruit pieces in his mouth. The flavor was spicy-sweet. “See? The shape doesn’t affect the flavor. Flavor is the real reason humans like food so much. Did you try the peaches?”

Previews: "Some of the Grand Sorcerer's uses of essence, while not yet fully understood, are well-documented—such as the ability to regulate altars and create contracts. It has recently come to the attention of this Council member that the Grand Sorcerer has an ability yet to be recorded: the power to use essence to create familiars. As a member of the Council that is associated with the Grand Sorcerer, I had understood that this ability existed, in concept. The Grand Sorcerer on occasion will mention the existence of a familiar, but pressing him on the subject has resulted in few answers. On the 23rd of this month I visited the Grand Sorcerer's manor for the first time and made two key discoveries relevant to the research of the Council."
