My grumpiness against Valve is 50% them being boneheads with store policy stuff, but the other 50% is them tacking lootboxes onto a personally fine game I already owned and pretending they did me a favor.
Yeah, I wish people would remember that Valve gave us the Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike loot crate economies, YEARS before the other big companies latched onto the scam and got all the shit for it.

Like sports betting has gotten so fucking horribly bad. Kids toys are leaning towards surprise boxes where the unwrapping is the selling point. Lootboxes gaining popularity again. When will it end

First, the lootboxes which is just gambling, and kids have easy access to. Second, the most recent one, the sudden drop of a weapon skin re-roll mechanic that has crashed the skin market, while benefiting a very small amount of recent accounts that were on the platform.

Lootboxes are not just a problem for kids, i'm afraid.

The whole "oh, but lootboxes ARE okay?" rejoinder to literally any criticism of gacha mechanics falls flat for me because, well, no, I don't play games with lootboxes either. Or daily limits, premium currencies, season passes, blindbox cosmetics, pay-to-win bullshit, or in-app purchases of any kind.

Esos anuncios del Gobierno de España sobre las lootboxes tienen razón, alguien debería de hacer algo, pero quién..................................

ngl I'd do 150 in return for the death of lootboxes
AAA video games should cost $100 on launch. this would still be extremely cheap for the amount of time and enjoyment you get out of them! But an audience of whiny babies has kept them literally at the same price for *two decades* despite both general inflation *and* sector-specific costs rising

gamers will buy season passes and lootboxes for more than the box price of the game but raise that initial price to $80 and they will set your studio on fire

And, you know they're busy bouncing around doing their eyes wide shut shit far far from these expensive lootboxes.

Idk what a game should cost, but any games higher than $50 should have a playable demo
Also I support launch day expansion packs/DLC (not lootboxes) if it drops the base price

Guys, you don't understand. AAA games need to cost 100 dollars, or we'll have to deal with microtransactions, lootboxes and season passes. :^)

The yorps are so funny. They'll really go around saying things like "you can tell that *spins wheel* the CPGB-ML arent a real socialist party by the fact that they havent yet adopted a clear stance on *rolls d20* the subject of fortnite lootboxes"

Years ago I recall an ex-bioware dev explaining the logic behind lootboxes (the big point of discussion at the time), stating that games are increasingly expensive to make and that "the prices for games will increase in the future"
I always think of that whenever this conversation comes up

Something I really like in Final Fantasy XIV is that they seem to go all out with Holiday quests. Getting a mount as a reward for a fun little quest is great. Elder Scrolls Online would have paywalled it behind a premium currency you can only get in lootboxes.

Microtransactions/lootboxes and other skeevy obfuscating and manipulative monetization practices in gaming.
It's a niche and possibly even petty concern, but I took a firm ethical stance that I didn't want to introduce my audience to games that could give them a god damn gambling addiction!

Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
