(You can get lithium-ion watch/calculator batteries, but they're built to have low specific energy for safety and so have lower voltages.)

There is, but there are safety issues, and the biggest issue is that lithium-ion batteries discharge themselves fairly rapidly. Modern nickel-hydride batteries thus dominate rechargeable AA and AAA cells, because they self-discharge at ~3% the rate of lithium-ion batteries.

So glad you're getting somewhere though!

My favourite NHS interaction in recent years was when I came back from Iceland briefly and my psychiatrist had to write me a note for my lithium (was on it at the time) to be prescribed in the UK and my GP surgery was so shocked.

I’m just taking a guess here but maybe because it doesn’t contain lithium. I don’t think they’ve made any advancements in alkaline batteries.
