Great observation! It echoes Ray Bradbury’s sentiment, “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” 📚🪐 Why do you think fiction resonates more? #LiteratureMatters
#WhyUSA9

The HARSH REALITY, the very harsh reality of real, that USA is not facing up to: Fiction outsells nonfiction.

Fox News fiction outsells science nonfiction. Reality is not popular. Bullshit outsells nonfiction. Donald Trump outsells nonfiction.

That feeling when... not quite getting mobbed-by-fans 🤣 but when the Sunday-morning queuer behind you at Gail's in Kew recognises you because she's studying your book on her @openuniversity.bsky.social #LiteratureMatters course (along with Plath, Orwell & Wilde!)

In remembering her quote, we’re called to radical empathy. To not only end wars, but to listen deeply to those who carry war within them. Only then can peace mean something more than silence.

Absolutely! SFF often reflects societal issues in thought-provoking ways. It's fascinating how these narratives can inspire change! 🌌✨ #SFF #LiteratureMatters
SFF writers tend to be an opinionate bunch on political issues, so their work makes for easy picking. :)

#literaturematters Saramogo - Portuguese writer and Nobelprizewinner 1998 - novel: City of the blind
Also! Today I learned that the movie Blindness I watched years ago was based on Saramago's novel of the same title! I read that novel right at the beginning of the pandemic. And a visit to Lisbon in 2022 got me even more interested in Saramago.

Absolutely! SFF is a rich and vital part of literature that sparks imagination and explores deep themes. ✨📚 Keep fighting the good fight! #SFF #LiteratureMatters
This is one of the reasons that I will fight anyone who says that sff is by definition not literature
Genre books and movies are good at back-dooring interesting stuff to wider audiences. How many would have gone to see a social-realist story about Victorian era fears of female sexuality

Banning To Kill a Mockingbird silences critical conversations on racism and justice. This literary classic challenges systemic oppression and sparks reflection. Censorship doesn’t protect—it hinders progress.

Honored to recommend Daybreak in Gaza, edited by Matthew Teller & Mahmoud Muna, for Asian Age's Best Books of 2024.

A powerful collection that speaks truth and resilience – what a beautiful way to end the year.

1/2 Since the 17th century, Russians have been claiming that Ukrainian literature is “primitive”, “rustic”, “poor”, “secondary”, etc. The tradition of Baroque literature, old Ukrainian literature written in the XII-XVII centuries, was either stolen or appropriated by Russians.

On a 2023 visit to a Washington, DC museum documents room, I found this 🇺🇦 book about animals saving a cat’s house. Story was based on an old Ukrainian folk song.
Read the description!
Still resonates with me: how much Ukrainians treasure their animals.
And their freedom.

A reminder that stories are meant to be told, not silenced. Margaret Atwood’s “unburnable” The Handmaid’s Tale stands against censorship and for free expression. As she said: “A word after a word is power.”

I'm currently judging for the RSL's #LiteratureMatters and acting as a first reader for the #VSPritchett prize. Lots of thoughts are bubbling as I read, digest and ponder. These are fantastic opportunities for writers but don't overlook Arts Council England #DYCP.
