#LIRR
Okay! Picture dump of the Persona 5 cafe and a bonus "I'm recreating a day in Japan anyway, why not go to a 100-yen store?"

First up, the travel. 7 wasn't running, so I took LIRR. The sign "To New York" is a bit incongruous; Flushing is in Queens...but you can almost believe otherwise, looking out.

I suspect the recent use of conductors pre-boarding at NJT and LIRR is to defeat the "hide in the bathroom for 45 minutes" trick. Or to avoid holding the train up for the people who don't pay and the cops are called to yeet them from the train.

like, come on, proof of payment has existed for fucking forever. just do it, MTA, we believe in you.

the Transport Sydney network has operated on a proof of payment system for fucking ages, and it has far more stations than LIRR+MNR have. Opal readers on every platform, roving spot checks, done.

Dear Long Island Rail #Road, my debt
To your system, I’ll never forget.
Back in Seventy-Seven
Your train car was heaven:
‘Twas the place where my spouse & I met.

I have ridden the LIRR twice, into and out of NYC when visiting family for a wedding on LI... and I will never forgot the sound of this announcement.

Taking what is probably my last-ever trip on the LIRR and somebody poured absolutely an entire large hazelnut coffee all over every possible inch of the floor of this train car. Watching everybody doing duck waddles trying to get through to a seat without becoming coated in it. Delightful. Stunning.

These seats on the LIRR are about to tell jokes for King Francis I

as the crowds get in the way of others. the plus side of penn is there’s multiple entrances to the platforms ( 4 for lirr, 3 for njtransit ) and fairly fast to get down if you know the layout and transfer between trains
November 15, 2025 at 3:22 PM
That's the only way to do it. I fly MacArthur when I can, but JFK is the only option for most of my flights. Coming in from Smithtown, LIRR to AirTrain is a no-brainer
November 15, 2025 at 2:49 PM
the LIRR to Amtrak connection is really fast ( way better than say, Kings Cross in London because that’s a terminal and each service is separated) although confusing. it’s not worth reducing amtrak frequency north of penn. maybe just the amtraks that terminate at nyc could go to jamaica?
November 15, 2025 at 2:25 PM
like in other cities, all rail (MNR/LIRR) trips that begin and end within the five boroughs should be equal in cost to the subway fare. game-changer.
November 15, 2025 at 12:06 PM
like. i followed Michael C Hall into an eggplant-purple van with no doors who drove me to a train station on some island agglomeration of Long Island City and Randalls, and i took an LIRR train that was also for some reason going into the main platforms of GCT, and the announcer said not to believe—
November 15, 2025 at 10:52 AM
they changed the font and layout of the lirr paper tickets
November 14, 2025 at 10:23 PM
I cranked up Johnny Paycheck's "Don't Monkey With Another Monkey's Monkey" on the LIRR for the same reason, but it had no effect (and I stopped halfway through since it wasn't fair to the other innocents on the train).

Taking the LIRR this weekend?

Be sure to take a look at our planned service changes before you go.
Happy Friday! We’re halfway through November and that means the holiday season is right around the corner 🍁

There are service changes on the subway and LIRR this weekend. Here’s how that will affect how you get around.

We've completed upgrades at St. Albans Station to make it fully accessible!

The station now features a new street-to-platform elevator, new communication and security systems, and parking lot accessibility improvements.

Getting off the LIRR people start getting on the train without first letting people off. Thankfully people do call it out
November 14, 2025 at 7:21 PM
Overheard on LIRR: “Their own country? What do you mean? China’s doing this right now? The Dalaï Lama can’t go to Tibet? I mean, I guess… Hmmmmmmmm.”
November 14, 2025 at 7:17 PM
MARC seems to be the "helping hand" of all the other commuter railroads. They've lent their cars to LIRR, NJT, SEPTA, even Amtrak.

And I may be biased but I think we have comfy coaches :)

Love taking the new LIRR service directly into Grand Central. $5 off peak City ticket and Jamaica Airtrain. Reliable and journeys are quick and you dont have your cab driver making you feel nauseous along the way. #NYC
The roads I go JFK are positively tragic. Just a hot mess snarled with construction and traffic and potholes. I hate it.
November 14, 2025 at 5:24 PM
A bit of an exaggeration for JFK. If you’re headed from Midtown, you should be able to make it in under an hour. For sure the AirTrain frequencies and fare need to be improved, same with the LIRR connection, but the actual infrastructure is appropriate
November 14, 2025 at 3:40 PM
LIRR Penn->Jamaica is much better than half-hourly?
November 14, 2025 at 3:37 PM
Ugh it's so unpleasant. Despite the much longer commute, I usually take the MTA/LIRR + AirTran because the time lost is still better than arriving nauseous.
November 14, 2025 at 3:23 PM
Our team is making accessibility upgrades to Hollis and over Halloweekend, we installed a new tunnel as a first step towards extending the length platforms.

After cutting power on the third rail, they unbolted the tracks and moved them away, demolishing the retaining wall at 99th Avenue.
November 14, 2025 at 2:59 PM
Interesting how this is basically the inverse of NYC - flat fare in the five boroughs, zone-ish pricing on our overground equivalents (LIRR / metro north / njtransit)
