Latest local election 2026 seat projection, taking into account all defections and by-elections since LE2025 and now updated with results from Lib Dem "super-Thursday" last week 😂.

Model assumptions in comment below.

Ref 57% (4/7)
SNP 33% (1/3)
Ind 33% (3/9)
Lab 27% (12/44)

Latest local election 2026 seat projection, taking onto account all defections and by-elections since LE2025. NB: this is a projection, not a prediction (high-level assumptions in comment below). If I was to hazard a guess at where it will be wrong, I think Green gains will be higher, Reform lower.

The Tories' 21 defections to Reform so far today have now put them ahead of Labour on total defections since LE2025:

Alongside Reform and the Lib Dems, the Green Party would also be big winners, picking up a further ~300 net gains vs LE2025 to take them over 1,000 councillors for the first time.
September 27, 2025 at 3:29 PM
If Labour can’t improve on their 28% retention rate of recent by-elections (as this model assumes), or win them back from other parties (which they are yet to do once since LE2025) then they will be on track to lose nearly 1,700 seats vs their position last May.
September 27, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Nevertheless, this model does highlight some important dynamics: Labour will be defending nearly 2,000 seats – more than ⅓ of their total. The Tories are defending just over 1,000 – around ¼ of theirs. This is in stark contrast to LE2025, where the Tories were defending many more seats than Labour.

Conversely, I've heard quite a few reports from local campaign teams in places Reform did well in LE2025, about how GE-only voters turning out for the locals had a big impact. Especially in places where turnout is already very low, coupled with previously-regular LE voters abstaining.

To go back to the main point re. LE2025, IMO Labour see ReformUK has been able to slice of some "revolutionary activist" types as well as mobilise trad non-voters, while trad voters stay at home × they're concerned that ReformUK are beginning to "own" this political ground as they own immigration
