#KesslerSyndrome
6/9 The greatest fear among scientists is the "Kessler syndrome."

This is a nightmare scenario where one collision triggers a chain reaction of more collisions, creating an exponential cascade of new, deadly junk.

With each new spacecraft launched, the risk of orbital collisions grows.

It's not just Astronomers who are worried about dead satellites:

This is the indirect effect of privatizing #spaceexploration. We also have #Elon dumping truckloads of tiny satellites with dubious capabilities that they make up for in sheer numbers. #KesslerSyndrome is about to happen at any second and that moron is pumping in more trash up there.

A growing threat to our increasing reliance on #satellites, and so many more being launched.

Could happen at anytime with the wrong move or accident. The concept of the movie Gravity is not far fetched. In fact…:

So apparently the #kesslersyndrom has already started. The amount of avoidance maneuvers grew 3x over the last 6 months, and the amount of junk in the orbit went up by 40% over the last 5 years.

What now? It's hard to internalize that it's already here. It will be a quick ride from now. It goes […]

We had questions today on the Kessler Syndrome. Attached is a recent summary and update by Dr Sabine Hossenfelder. In short: this is real and worrisome. Ground-based lasers might be the answer. Also #astroscale #clearspace-1

#NASA #KesslerSyndrome
