#Kertasníkir
Tonight Kertasníkir (Candle Stealer), the last of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He steals candles (that used to be made from animal fat) and eats them.

Children leave their shoes out in the window, he gives the good ones a small gift, the bad ones get a potato.

Tonight our 13th and final santa comes out of the highlands to bring gifts but also mischief. This is Kertasníkir, or Candle Stealer.

In the before times, candles were made from tallow, and thus semi edible. This Yule Lad will steal your candles for a midnight snack.

Just to let you know that the Yule Lads are coming.
They may look as though they are going to do you in but are very straight and do good things, so don’t fear them or up-tight them.
Try to assist them without neglecting your Apple business and without letting them take control of Savile Row.

The Yule lads will gradually start to appear at night time in December 12th and forward to December 24th.

So here’s my take of them I did back in 2021.

In Island ists im Winter dunkel
Da hilft meist kerzliches Gefunkel
Drum passt gut auf, auf euer Licht
Womöglich sieht mans heute nicht
Wenn Kertasníkir war im Haus
Bleiben die Kerzen heute aus
Hat er sie alle doch geklaut
Und so Erleuchtung euch versaut.

#Kertasníkir, the 13th and final Yule Lad known as the “Candle Beggar” is the last to arrive on Christmas Eve. He likes to follow children around to steal their candles. The candles are made of tallow so Kertasníkir likes to munch on them! #YuleLads #Iceland #Christmas #handdrawn #sketch #art #ink

Happy publication day to @villimeymist.bsky.social for #WhatProtectsOurHeritage & Other Aberrations! At this dark time, approaching #Advent, what better than a gory #YuleLads tale from this collection of grisly short stories based on Icelandic folklore? Kertasníkir, I'm shocked at you! #BookSky 💙📚🇮🇸

Tonight, Kertasníkir arrives (AI image):

The thirteenth was Candle Beggar
- 'twas cold, I believe,
If he was not the last
of the lot on Christmas Eve.
He trailed after the little ones
who, like happy sprites,
ran about the farm with
their fine tallow lights.

Kertasníkir um kerti bað
er kom hann mannabyggðum að,
í hellinum vild’ann hafa bjart
og hrekja burt vetrarmyrkrið svart.

(Nú þjóðar velferð hann þættist styrkja
og þyti upp á heiðar að virkja.)

Ég á minningar um að fá í skóinn, mandarínur, kinderegg og svona smádót og einu sinni kartöflu sem var bróðir mínum að kenna reyndar. Vinur pabba kom tvisvar sem kertasníkir og þótti það slá í gegn. Hugsa hlýlega til þessa tíma!
