Even in KH1, a game I'm not super fond of re: the combat, there was a really solid flow where you would position yourself in a way where your gap closer gets you into a good position, and then you'd follow up with solid AoE for mob fights, or single target for bosses

kh2 made a lot of improvement to movement and added combat things i wanted when i played kh1, like a move to clear distance and a launcher. but i wish it had more platforming and the first game's mp system. it creates a situation where it's weird going back to kh1's comparatively worse movement.

Not as extreme as the Dark Aeons, but KH1 Final Mix made synthesis entirely unfun.

May I recommend @2cphoenix.bsky.social 's Game Break Down on KH1? This madman and his cozy small team went over the whole game per world, exploring the best ways to farm for crafting materials, including a "Pre-Darkness" materials total if you want to postpone crafting until the endgame! :)

That feels like it would've been too soon. Treasure Planet wasn't even out yet when KH1 released, going by the movie's release in November 2002, and the Japanese KH1 release of March of that year.
From what I could find just now, it might've been considered for KH3D, which makes more sense

I have played KH1-3 and they're a bit convoluted. For some reason I love that about them. It's like a FromSoft game: you finish it, go "wtf," and then look up YT vids to explain what just happened 🤣

KH2 really set a lot of the standards for the series, from its UI to little details, that almost every game after adopted, that when you look at KH1 it feels so distinct from the rest of the series as a result
