"Pull-Circle Pride" "In 1995 or 6, I decided I wanted to go to SF Pride. My best friend from high school and her boyfriend at the time came with me, in order to support me. I was full of hope and joy that I would finally be somewhere where I belonged, that I'd be with my people, that I wouldn't feel so alone anymore. Once we got there, I was horrified, overstimulated, and devastated. I was 17 or 18, had had NO exposure to anything queer, and did not have any capacity to process what I was seeing, except to see that I had NOTHING in common with the people there. I felt more alone then than I ever had with my straight friends, and the hope that had buoyed me on the way up to the city crumbled beneath me, and dropped me into a pit. As we left, I cried silently in desperation in the back of the car. I thought I'd never find my place in the queer community then, and it embittered me." "Fast forward twenty plus years and here I am deciding that I'm moving to Chicago but before I do, I want to march in the SF Pride parade. I'd been a few times in the intervening decades, but still never felt a part of things, so I decided to march instead of spectate. I walked with the PFLAG contingent, and asked my found family to join me. A group of them did, and it was one of the most glorious things I've ever done, and the best Pride experience I've ever had. I finally felt I was a part of the community, not because I'd conformed to anything or shoehorned myself in, but because I'd actively made a place for myself." "Nearly a decade later, I've only just now understood the full significance of that journey, of my first and last experiences with San Francisco Pride, and I can be proud now of the work that I did to find my way, and make my place. I don't know if you can relate to any of this but if you can, I hope it brings you joy, peace, and most of all, hope. You are loved. You are not alone. You are good enough, as you are, without stuffing yourself into a prescribed box. Shine. Shine, just as you are, for as yourself is when you shine the brightest."
